Pot Limit vs No Limit, Brent, 23. Oct 2003 05:49 | ||

| I have made an important discovery concerning my game last night. I have found that online I play pot limit hold'em much better than no limit. I feel that because I am pretty new to playing for a profit instead of just fun, pot limit allows me to make a mistake or two that won't seriously damage my bankroll. I played last night for 4 hours and profited $10/hour. While this isn't much it has built my confidence and pot limit has slowed down my game. In no limit I think I was trying to make a quick killing and ended up getting crushed myself. Has anyone else found such a difference playing pot limit and are there many different stratagies for playing it? Thanks for your help and advice. Brent | ||

| Well, pot limit is designed so that you can play more hands from upfront. In NL you need a powerhouse from early position because if you try to slip in with something marginal, you'll often get blown off the pot by someone waking up with a big hand and you won't even get to see a flop. In pot limit, you can come in with a lot more hands and see a flop. If it hits you hard, you can take off someone on a big pair for a lot of money. I like pot limit a lot, but find that there are a ton more NL games going, at UB where I play at least. If you really like to play PL, I suggest you learn PLO, as it's easier to find games. People play NL very badly in general, but oftentimes the bad players will catch you, and the swings can be brutal with the amounts you are betting in NL. Here's an exaple, you have AK and somebody with ATs calls your all-in when the A comes on the flop, most of the time you'll win a ton, but if he spikes that ten, you lose a ton. The laws of chance determine that there will be times when you are running bad and people will start hitting longshots against you over and over. So just a word of warning, you need a pretty big bankroll for big bet poker. Good luck! | ||
