Was I too passive?, Boftx, 22. Oct 2003 21:35

This was on a surprisingly tight/passive table for Party, meaning only 3 or 4 players seeing the flop usually. Both the players who stayed in with me had the ability to check-raise the turn or even river when sittin on a monster, I didn't trust either one as far as I could spit. I had stolen the blinds a number of times already and was usually getting way too much respect for my pre-flop raises. I bet the flop mainly to get information.

3/6 TexasHTGameTable (Limit)
seat5 posts small blind (1)
seat6 posts big blind (3)
** Dealing down cards **
Dealt to boftx [ 5s, 5d ]
seat7 folds. seat9 folds. seat10 calls (3) seat2 calls (3) seat3 folds.
boftx calls (3) seat5 calls (2) seat6 checks.
** Dealing Flop ** : [ 3d, 7c, Js ]
seat5 checks. seat6 checks. seat10 checks. seat2 checks.
boftx bets (3) seat5 folds. seat6 calls (3) seat10 calls (3) seat2 folds.
** Dealing Turn ** : [ Ah ]
seat6 checks. seat10 checks.
boftx checks.
** Dealing River ** : [ As ]
seat6 checks. seat10 checks.
boftx checks.
** Summary **
Board: [ 3d 7c Js Ah As ]
boftx [ 5s 5d ] [ two pairs, aces and fives -- Ah,As,Js,5s,5d ]
seat6 [ Ts 8d ] [ a pair of aces -- Ah,As,Js,Ts,8d ]
seat10 [ Qd Td ] [ a pair of aces with queen kicker -- Ah,As,Qd,Js,TdQd(kicker card) ]

Should I have bet out on the turn and/or river?

Yes. I would have bet the turn representing the ace after play had been checked to you. I'd guess your opponents would have folded.

But after the turn is checked around, I would definitely have bet the river. The turn play would have convinced anyone who had an ace and was planning to check-raise that such a play wouldn't work. They wouldn't try an attempted check-raise again. If they had the goods, they would have bet out.

Once it's checked around again, I'd be fairly certain that your hand is good. If you bet, there's a good chance no one will call, but it's possible that someone with a high card would pay you off, thinking you might be bluffing. I think it's a chance worth taking.

hey boftx, with your position, i would have bet the river after not getting raised on the flop and no bet on the turn.
