Should I have waited to raise?, iceman5, 22. Oct 2003 10:33

Im playing a very soft $1/$2 table (Im up $50 in an hour and a half). Im UTG +2. I limp with JT. 2 players to my left limp and BB calls for 4 players. Flop comes Q98 with 2 diamond (I dont have any). I bet out because of the diamonds. Both players to my left fold but the BB raises. I reraised and he folded. I think I shouldve waited for the turn and check raised him correct?

No, I think you played the hand correctly. You got as much money into the pot as possible when you held the best hand. In this case it seems unlikely he was drawing a to a flush or else he'd most likely call anyways. Why take the chance he could get a flush or let him complete the higher straight (a J comes and he holds a K). The only time I'd slowplay this hand and wait till later streets is if i'm sure this guy is totally clueless about my holding and will continue to bet into me without a good draw. Without that sort of read I'd risk my chances that he'd fold to a reraise and take down the pot already. Better to win a smaller pot than risk losing it down the line.

well played. look at the post from table captain. same exact hand and was outdrawn. much better to get the money in and maybe win it right there with that 2 flush. i cant believe he folded...nice!

I also think you played this hand correctly. You didn't give enough information on your opponent so that we all got a feel for his style of play so we cannot give exact responses as to what we would of done in that particular situation.

In general you want to play hands like this as fast as possible and get the bets in early and often to try to skew the odds for the flush draws so that they won't call. Also you want to stop a set from catching full on you. Great play IMHO. Win every pot you can no matter if its stealling the blinds or a capped 10 way action to the river pot every dollar that goes into your stack is not yours.

i had the exact same hand play out in a much different way. On the flop it was bet in front of me and i raised(20-40) i was reraised in late pos. and the original bettor and I both call.Turn is a 10. Ep checks I bet(not wanting the board to get any worse for free)raised in late position EP folds i call river is a 2. I bet get raised again and call he shows KJ for the gutshot when my straight was counterfeited on the turn. point is you cant be unhappy to take down the pot what if he had called with 2d3d yod be pretty pisses when a diamond hit on the turn. Just my opinion. Table Captain
