when authors/teachers/people in general talk about earnings per hour in poker they are using terms that are easy to understand.

when you sit down at a table the cosmic forces determine what your EV is for each hand before any cards are dealt *no not some religious mumbo jumbo i mean all the things that determine how you will play the next hand*

if you played perfect poker and earned 1 BB an hour technically you could reduce that to say you have an edge of X amount on everyhand before the hands are dealt, obviuosly the more hands you play with an edge the better.

however noone plays perfect poker and all sorts of weird variables come into play, your edge can go up and down depending on position *some of us are weaker/stronger playing up front for example* some play better preflop than post, some play the river better and on and on.

this is why knowing yourself, your strengths and weaknesses and taking full advantage of them with table selection is so important.

never sit for long at a table where you think your EV is almost nil or negative *this is usually an unconscious thing that you need to pull up front* as not many things are worse for your bankroll than in the back of your head you feel like your banging your head against a wall *playing scared basically*

I agree.

Theoretically, at the beginning of every hand, before the cards are dealt, you will have an EV for that hand. This will depend on your position, your opponents' skill, your seat relative to your opponents, how well you and they are playing at that moment, etc. That's why game selection and seat selection are so important. They help to maximize your EV.
If the rule of thumb for the mid-level games is one big bet per hour, someone who is extremely game selective will play fewer hours but will have a higher win rate. (Overall he may make less $$ because of fewer hours, but his losses will be less severe and less frequent because his EV will be higher).
The best weekend warriors should, in my opinion, have a higher hourly rate than a comparable pro since he will only play on weekends where the games are a little bit better.
