Well, i was just in a tournament, made a play and got bitched at so thus i bring it to all of you. I am in a sit and go on party, 5 ppl left, blinds are 200/400, i have 777 and post big blind leaving me 377 (not so good). There is no small blind because someone was just knocked out. i get dealt 48o, its folded around to the button who goes all in for 640, i call, and knock him out of the tournament after flopping two pair. He proceeds to bitch at me for playing 48o. My thoughts are that if i don't play soon, i will find myself gone from the tournament especially if i leave myself only 1 bb. his raise gives me about 4.5 to 1 on the call and 23o is 32% against a random hand so i felt the call was justified. His ideas were that pot odds thinking belonged only in a ring game and not in tourneys. Please let me know what you think of the play and on this guys responses, I appreciate it!

Andrew

who's right is it to bitch for your style of playing...he was obviously trying to steal it from you, and like you said, u had only a few hands left in you. SO why not go for it when there is only 1 person to beat out. This is the absolute best move you could have made and tell him to shut his face and learn to play poker. I hate when people get pissed when they get called out and blame it on the person for making a risky call. Why do you think they call it gambling, that call was part of poker and was by far the proper way to handle that situation. Good job.

You absolutely made the right play against such a small raise from a steal position. 84o against a random hand is 32%, so your hand was probably around 35% winner, making this an EASY call. And he is the clueless one saying that odds have no place in tourny's.

he's not thinking clearly or doesnt understand the basics, either way, try not to engage in arguments after a beat, just say nothing. trying to explain your actions is always pointless.

A few points: Overall - wrong play!

1. He was bitching that he lost, not that you called him.
2. Your odds numbers are skewed. Obviously if he bet the 600 he doesn't have a 'random' hand. He probably had 2 overcards or a pair making you more of a 4%-15% chance winner instead of the 32% you have been delusioned to think.
3. An age old lesson - A hand is not over before the flop! you have taught him a lesson.
4. Anytime you want to play with me, I would love to have your style of thought at my tables :-)

A few counter points: Overall - right play.

1. I agree

2. Your math is way off here. 4%? No, sorry. Even if his opponent holds 88, he's 8.5% to win, and that is his worst matchup. If his opponent doesn't have him completely killed like this, then he's probably on the order of a 30% underdog. If you figure he'd make this play with any two broadway cards, or any pair, 30% (a little worse than 2 to 1) is right on the mark. Risking 240 chips to win 1040 chips is over 4 to 1. This is a no brainer call.

3. Yep.

4. And I'd love to have your style at my tables. I'll take over 4 to 1 as a 2 to 1 underdog all day long.

lets look at the big picture
first
400 big blind + 400 call + 240 raise =1040 in pot
240 to call
4.3 to 1 roughly 23%

but lets say you think your hand is worse than that and you fold
next hand you have to donate 200 of your remaining 377 to leave 177 which wont even allow you to fully call the BB which means your screwed add to all this the fact that you have the chance to move up a place *assuming only top 3 pay* by knocking him out i would say a call is a for sure.
you dont like your hand but sometimes you have to play the cards your dealt to the best of your abilities and amazingly sometimes thats enough
