Sit-n-Go Tourney Reports For a Week, FeliciaLee, 21. Oct 2003 08:39

Sometimes everything just falls into place. Have you ever noticed that in poker? If you play reasonably well (or even not!), and you catch some cards, suddenly you find yourself in the driver's seat, in full control of the game.

The last two weeks have been rough for me. Lots of you know about the diabetes ad nauseum, so I'm not even going to go there. The good news is, I'm feeling better, and that is all that needs to be said.

Since we haven't been going to Atlantic City, I've been playing a lot of sit-n-go's on Stars. At first I started out doing well. It was actually quite funny. I would open up a Stud tourney and people would flood in, wanting to take advantage of the new "fish" at Stud. But after the first day, I had a much harder time filling the games, lol. I cashed quite a few times (2:3 at Stud, 1:1 at NLHE).

The second day I played six sit-n-go's. Playing stoned is not such a hot idea. I was heavily medicated, yet managed to chop my first tourney, and proceeded to bubble or just completely bomb out the other five.

The third day I only played two tourneys. I chopped one, but won first, and bubbled the second.

On the fourth day I played two tourneys at Stars, and one at Party. I cashed at 3rd on the first Stars, bombed on the second and took 3rd on the Party (which has a horrible structure with very few starting chips. That will be my last sit-n-go there).

Day five found me only entering one tourney. Bubbled out at 4th <sigh>

On day six, Jason and I played (Jason Hold'em on 2+2). Jason had never played a Stud tourney before, but still conquered the field and came in at 2nd. Remarkable! I cashed at 3rd. Then a group of 2+2er's played a $10+1 NLHE sit-n-go after the Zoo HU tourney. I managed 4th, forever the bubble girl! Glenn played an outstanding game and placed first! Goooo Zoo!

Now we have made it through the week up to yesterday (Friday, June 20). I played quite a few tourneys with another 2+2 member, as well as one here and there in subsequent tourneys. I managed to show all of them that I couldn't play Stud (lol) and bubbled or bombed out of all four tourneys, including one last place finish where every pat hand I had got outdrawn until I was down to the felt and gone. Yesterday was NOT a good tourney day. FPS didn't work, so I went back to the basics. The basics didn't work, so I tightened up. Tightening up didn't work, so I limped a lot. Limping didn't work, so I hit myself over the head with a hammer and knocked myself out (haha). Basically nothing I did worked. One of the more experienced members of 2+2 gave me some great advice, but more or less assured me that it wasn't my playing, I just got outdrawn a LOT. It's nice to get a little backup.

If you are still awake, we are now up to today. I played two more Stud tourneys. One was a $5+.50 Stud high. Bombed out. The same experienced player from yesterday suggested that I move up a notch to the $10+1 tourneys because not every player lives to draw. He knew they weren't really much better players, but they would fold just a little more often. He was right. So we played a $10+1 Stud HL. Sure enough, I got run down on hand after hand, and could only make two lows the whole tourney. Trip aces were not only run down by one opponent, but by two, who would not give up. One got a flush, the other got a four of a kind (kings). Ouch. My 2+2 friend didn't fare much better, and was out after me.

By this time most of the hair on my head had gone into my hands and was littering the floor. I was 0:7 playing against the worst Stud players in history. Finally I suggested to my 2+2 friend that he should pick a game, since he was only playing Stud to accommodate me anyway. His pick was NLHE, which is his A game. We found a $5.00+.50 and settled right in.

...And finally, here is the point to my whole long post...things just clicked! It was one of those tourneys were everything goes right. You go in with the best hand, you win with the best hand. You don't outdraw someone with cheese, nor does anyone outdraw you. The best hand holds up, you don't make mistakes and hit the raise button when you meant to fold with 72o. Click, click, click. One of those poker stories that you read about. All of the pieces just fell into place.

Here are some of the highlights:

--A9 on the button, only one limper who would raise with any decent hand. Nothing on the flop, no one bet. No one bet the turn, so I bet for the semi-steal. Only the limper stayed with me. He was on a draw with J9 and I took the pot.

--AA under the gun, raised to 300, one caller. He bet big on raggedy flop, I went all-in, he folded.

--65 in the BB, free play, checked to turn with a five, river a five, bet 10x bb, no callers.

--QQ in MP. Raised double the bb before me, I raised 10x bb, all folded.

--AK in the bb. 2+2er raises 5x bb. I am the only caller. xQx on the flop, 2+2er goes all-in, I fold (he had pocket queens).

--JJ in the bb. One limper plus the SB, I raise 10x the bb and all fold.

--QJ in the sb. BB is all-in. Limper and I check it down. I catch a queen and bb is out.

--Snuck in with AJh in the bb. AAx flop, one heart. Bet 300, UTG raises to 600, folded to me, I flat call. Heart on the turn, I bet the minimum (150), lol. He raises to 600. I reraise him all-in and catch a heart on the river to make a flush. I had a bigger kicker than he did, at any rate. What was he thinking playing A4o UTG anyway???

At this point my 2+2 friend tells me that the players are so bad that we will probably get into the money if we just avoid any close calls. We both tighten our belts and go back into the fight with five players left.

--AQs in the SB. Raised double the BB by an EP player. Button raises 4x more than that and is all-in. I chicken out against multiple opponents and fold. EP has 22 and knocks out button holding A8s. I would have won.

Now the the 22 guy has most of the chips on the table. He plays almost every hand, but is weak and passive. Stereotypical calling station. Loves to play, play, play. He only ever raises double the bb, he is so weak and scared. He will fold to an all-in at times even if the all-in has an extremely short stack and can be busted easily. Weak player. We are down to four and I am wondering what is going to happen...

My 2+2 friend is to the right of the 22 weakling now and keeps raping him with all-in raises every other hand. He is slowly building up his chips, although he we started four handed with him being almost tied for the shortest stack.

Finally 2+2er goes all-in with middle pair against 22 weakling and this time the weakling has a hand and busts my friend out on the bubble. Boo hoo But now we're in the money and the 22 weakling has almost all the chips.

The weakling almost always gives me a free play in the bb. Yes, even 3-handed, lol. The short stack goes all-in with two pair and gets outdrawn on the river by the weakling, who makes his gutshot straight draw (lol).

Now we are head's up and the 22 weakling has over 11,000 chips to my 2400!!! He keeps doubling the bb, I either go over the top or fold. Then the deck starts hitting me like a freight train. QT all-in, A6 all-in, 55 all-in, JJ all-in, A8 all-in, and I won. Boom, boom, boom, that fast. I won't tell you the number of times that he called, whether I was all-in before the flop or after, when I hit or didn't. It doesn't matter, really, and I don't want to bore you with every detail. Suffice it to say, I got hit smack in the head with the deck and just kept rolling. He is such a calling station that he gave away his lead and let me win. I probably would have won anyway, with those cards, but it would have taken a heck of a lot longer had he known how to play.

Wow, I feel a LOT better now! Jeez, did I say that NLHE was my worst game? Naw, I didn't say that, no way. Not me.

Felicia :)
