I had 2nd Best Hand Syndrome last night!!!, Eman, 21. Oct 2003 06:35

I played for about 4 hours last night at a 2/4 table on PartyPoker and got crushed so many times holding the 2nd best hand. In the beginning I thought the table was gonna be great, Very loose/passive. I was up about $50 in the first hour. I won some nice pots with several people calling me to the river. But then it happened. "Second Best Hand Syndrome". That the worst. Id rather get a long run of crappy cards than get SBHS. My flushes were beat by higher flushes. My two pair by higher two pair, My sets by higher sets. It was awful.
A lot of times I knew I was beat by the river, but for one bet I would call. Example:
I have QJs and the board has three of my suit. River brings another one of my suits and the EP now bets out. Im positive he has either the K or A, but call anyway.

My question is this. Even if you know your beat by the river. Is it right to call one bet? This was a very passive table so I doubt anyone was making any kinda move at the pot. I know I should have folded alot of my hands. But for one bet on the river I usually called

It's usually correct to call the river for 1 bet if the pot odds are good enough. You need to ask yourself a couple questions:

1. Is there ANY chance he's bluffing?
1. Is there ANY chance he's betting trips, a straight, or a lower flush?

If either of these are a yes, what % of the time would he do that? Now you can create a ratio and find out if calling has a positive EV.

If the answer to both questions are no then the answer is easy, fold and save youself a bet, however the opponent who you can positively answer no to is quite rare, so lean on the side of calling.

You didn't really tell us how the hand played out so its tough to say what he was thinking, but with a 4 flush on board and the pot probably pretty big(since you flopped the flush) I don't think I would fold for one bet in pretty much any circumstance.

Sorry to hear about your bad run, don't let it affect your game, the money will find its way back eventually....

In the example I gave, the pot was pretty big thanks to my raises. Most of the pots were rather big because I usually was the aggressor and raising until the river because I thought I had the best hand. Maybe I need to slow down my tight/"over aggressive" style. But in a passive table, it was hard to tell if I was beat before the river. Another example:

I held pocket 9's, in late position, three callers to me, I call, BB calls.
Flop: 4, 9, A, (great flop for me, thinking I'll get paid off by anyone holding and A).
Its checked to me I bet, All call.
Turn is a 4, (im now counting my winnings now)
MP bets, I raise, BB folds EP calls, MP calls,
River is a K, MP bets, I raise, EP now Reraises?????,
MP calls as do I.
EP shows Pckt K's????
MP showed AJ

Hi Eman

Are you playing hands that are making the second best hand? Sometimes when you are continuously making the second best hand it is because you are playing hands in situations that you are LIKELY to make the second best hand. Your hand is in trouble to other hands in the pot if you make your hand!
