| I too am going to vegas and am trying to decide where to stay. I'll be on a bachelor party for 4 nights, then i am staying by myselft to play poker for 3. I don't care what the room is like as it will just be a place to crash, but i do prefer to stay cheap. Not $15 cheap where i have to worry about some prositute trying to stick me with a needle, but cheap. Is El Cortez an okay place to stay? What i read about it is that its cheap and clean, without any luxsuries. Also, it is on the corner of Fremont and the strip, making it accessible to both. In an earlier post someone mentioned the Budget Suites. I can't find any info on them, Can anyone help me with this? Mark | ||

| El Cortez isn't on the corner of Fremont & the Strip; it isn't even on the corner of Fremont & Las Vegas Blvd. Besides, Las Vegas Blvd. is a very long street, and Fremont is about four miles north of the resort casinos, way too expensive for a cab ride (~$20 not including tip) and way too far to walk. If you want cheap, but a closer cab ride to the resorts, try Luxor, Boardwalk, Barbary Coast, San Remo, Ballys, Flamingo, Excalibur, Imperial Palace, Circus Circus, Riviera (although these two are a good ways on the north strip), Stratosphere (way north). These should be from $29 to $79 per night, midweek. Mid-range, try Paris, Aladdin, MGM, Orleans (off-strip), Treasure Island, Tropicana ($79 to $109). Expensive, try Venetian, Mirage, Bellagio ($129 on up). | ||

| I just got back from vegas and stayed at the WestWard HO!... It was mediocre..pretty old school rooms and a dumpy casino, but it was cheap and the rooms were clean. It is located by Circus Circus across the street from Riviera...Its a decent place if you are looking for cheap clean rooms and dont plan on staying there much to gamble... | ||

| If you're trying to avoid getting robbed/stabbed/stuck with needles, avoid El Cortez. It is the dump to end all dumps, and your geography is off- as the other poster said it ain't anywhere near what you think of as the strip, and it isn't even terribly close to the other downtown casinos (it's a scary walk away). If you're there midweek there are plenty of nice hotels you can stay at for $50-75 a night, sometimes less. If you want to be downtown try Main Street Station- fairly new, very decent, very cheap. | hotel-wise (and I've never stayed there), I understand it to be basic but fine. Plenty of people have a special affinity for the place, I like it but don't love it. You might want to solicit other opinions on their poker room, I haven't played poker there but considering it's the home of the WSOP the poker room sure doesn't look world-class. The rate is good, you won't find a better one than that. I would call Main Street Station first though- they might have a comparable rate that isn't contingent on any playing time, and I know that hotel is nice because I've stayed there several times. MSS is around the corner from Fremont Street, basically a block away. Very accessible. Eli on 20. | Binions is a smoking cardroom. So is Sam's Town. Mirage isn't. I don't know if this is an issue with anyone, but personally it's much easier to play when I can see the cards. :D | ||
