Strategy Question, NickG, 20. Oct 2003 03:52

I played 1-3 HE at a BM casino yesterday, and am wondering if there should be an adjustment in strategy based on the betting structure there.

The betting structure was $1 for both SB and BB and a $3 limit after that. About 70% of preflops were just $1 calls. If someone raised pre-flop to $3 most people would call to see the flop. You could raise $ 1,2, or 3 , but everyone raised $3 only, except for one guy. 70-100% staying to see the flop. I started out playing normal tight but always got outdrawn by someone who started with garbage. I adjusted my strategy to call with more speculative hands but fold them if someone raised preflop to $3. I also got more aggressive and raised the max when I had a genuine good starting hand. It seemed to help but would like opinions on this.

Also the max bet doesn't change on the turn at this BM, It is $3 for all betting rounds. Should I adjust my strategy with this betting structure vs. a conventional $2-4 game?

Nick,

I'd say you started off adjusting properly. If the game is loose and you can see a lot of multi player flops for $1 then you want to start playing more suited connectors, small pairs etc... from early positions.

I would be less inclined to checkraise on the flop from early position since you could probably lead out w/ a $3 bet and give people incorrect odds to draw you out.

You said "I adjusted my strategy to call with more speculative hands but fold them if someone raised preflop to $3." I'm not sure what you consider a speculative hand, but often times 10Js or 89s can be profitable if there are enough callers in the with you and you're in late position. Just be prepared to throw them away if you don't hit your flop.(even if you grab a pair). If you do grab a pair, don't go chasing unless the board is very favorable(no flush or obvious straight draws out).

One obvious tactic that is lost w/ the betting remaining the same every round is buying a free river card w/ a bet on the flop.

Thats all I can think of right now...

Nick,

When ever I play at the local Colorado B&M's the state mandated limit is $2 to $5 spread limit so I have quite a bit of exp in these LL spread games. You're correct that you can limp in with a much greater range of hands from multiple positions then you would in fixed limit games because of the low blind structure. IE mid level suited connectors from early position (89s) or one gapped suited connectors from mid position (108s). You are going to have to outplay your opponents post flop in these games. Play hands that work best in multi way pots because many of your opponents will not lay down to a $3 bet and since you cannot raise enough to get most of the players out there will often be 3 or 4 to showdown at the river.

My recomendation is to play much more aggressive then the normal player. You will of course want the higher end starting hands pre-flop but make sure to raise the max with them. I also never raise a partial bet any time (never raise $2 when you can raise $3.) Another reason to raise more often then calling is to get a free card when necessary, tough to do in these games but it does work sometimes.

You will also want to pay close attention to the not so obvious draws including gutshots and low end straights. Because you cannot double up the betting on the turn and river most of the time your opponents are going to have the correct pot odds (whether they realize it or not) to call you down. If one of the calling stations comes alive in a spread limit game beaware.

Good luck in your future adventures at this limit.
