Consider this option if you are running badly online., grant pittman, 19. Oct 2003 09:36

The next time you find yourself going through a bad run of cards online(or maybe you are there right now!!!) consider this as an option. Play live poker instead. One of the major differences between the two games is that live poker enables you to see your opponents and place a face to a playing style. Online poker requires,in most cases, that you have great recall along with a lot of playing hours with your opponents to make a similar comparison. If you read your opponents well and can actually see their mannerisms at the table, you will be more confident with your decisions in a live game than online. I pay off a lot looser online simply because I don't know my opponents as well and I have seen so much poor play that it has affected my judgment. When I am not certain about whether to call or fold I lean towards the call online more often. This does not mean I am right or wrong in doing so but when things aren't going your way it is certainly nice to save or make a bet with some degree of certainty rather than almost guessing. It's easier on both your mental playing state and your bankroll. Another point about playing live rather than online when you are going bad is that SOME players have a lot less tendency to go on tilt playing live. A large number of poker players take pride in playing the game as well as they can. They would rather point out the bad player in the game than be him. Playing in front of a live audience in which you are READILY ACCOUNTABLE for your actions can be enough to keep a player in line. There are no such safety nets available for the online player and so tilting is much more common online. Just my thoughts. GRANT PITTMAN

Grant,

Nice post. Now I realize that most of you on here don't have any problem like mine, but I was wondering about some advice. I am young and can't seem to find a local B&M at limits lower than 3-6. I'm only comfortable enough with my small bankroll to play 1-2, maybe the occasional 2-4 if I'm feeling well. Anyone have suggestions? Thank you.

Ian

two options, play online or save enough of a bankroll (i would suggest $2000) to play 3-6

great post Grant, my experience in total, but i was too scared to post it. (lot od online players here) i played online for a year and did ok, but i live in bay area 20 minutes from 3 major cardrooms and i enjoy live more, and make more money than online. i do like online tournies better than online ring though. some players style is better suited to online or live, just like some people are better ring or tournie.
i have a bigger edge live, so why would i play online anymore? i understand some people don't live near huge cardrooms like i do, so online is the only choice.
