Call or Re-raise all in w/ AA?, epper, 19. Oct 2003 09:25

49 people enter at $100 -- nl hold 'em. Everyone started w/ $1000 in chips. We are down to 11 and final table is 8 and all get paid, but i am there to win it all. My table has 5 guys left. Blinds are 75/150 w/ 15 ante. I have $2900.

I get AA under the gun. I raise to $300 (probably should have been slightly more). Everyone folds, and bb re-raises me to $1000. I have. I reraise all-in to make it $2935. He debates and then calls w/ AK. Flop: KK3 3 10. Busted. Frustrated by the bad beat and just want to make sure that I played it right . (side note: in a side game later, i lost w/ aa to ak, again -- unreal).

In a live game I'm going to put the question to him and make him commit all his chips before the flop. If he catches a flop - he's going to bust me but I can live with that - particularly if I know I got my money in with the best of it.

I'm not a tournament player but I recall a player, I believe it was at a tourney in France earlier this year or late last year, who left himself shortstacked early in the tourney when he threw kings away pre-flop after a series of raises and re-raises. He recovered and showed up at the final table. What I got out of it was - always leave yourself outs in a tourney.

I thought about a call, but that was a waste and lets him too easily. Plus, if he folds, I win a $1300 pot. Also, I was a huge favorite, and that is why I put my chips in. He later said that he made a mistake by calling.

You made the right play IMO.

Preflop you are the favorite, and he is right, he did make a big mistake by calling your all in.

AK is a drawing hand and he got lucky with that flop.

Thanks to all of you for confirming my play. Tough beat, but I have moved on and now need to post my question from last night's 100 +9 tourney w/ 170 players. Finished 29th.

not only did you play this right you played it close to perfect, the only thing to reconsider is your initial raise, if the blinds are at 150, you want to make everyone pay at least 600 to see a flop.....

This is a no-brainer all-in. Sure, you could lose to AK or KK or any hand for that matter, but to get all of your chips in when you absolutely KNOW you are ahead?? Can't beat that ever....good play.
