I'm planning a spring break trip to vegas for myself and three of my friends.

On www.vegas.com and I enter in the stats (4 people, 1 room) staying for 7 nights, they are quoting a price of about 600-700 a person for hotel and air, staying at places like the MGM grand, or Luxor, etc.

This seems unusually low to me, is this type of deal possible. Can I find a better deal somewhere? where?

Never been to vegas, do you need to cab everywhere up and down the strip or can you walk? If so where would be the best place to stay so you could walk to the various poker rooms.

This would be during march madness, so I'd love a day just at a sportsbook watching all the games, where would the best place be?

As for price, what would be an accurate price for everything. We'd like to stay at a nice place since its our first time out there, but get the best value for quality/price we can find.

"All Inclusive" hotel-air deals generally aren't good values. Remember, you've got 4 people sharing a room, which should be priced by the night, not the person.

You don't say where you're flying from, which is obviously important info. Before booking anything, I'd strongly suggest you find out what the airline tickets would cost to book yourself and then call the hotels you're interested and see what kind of room rates you could get.

My guess: it'll wind up much cheaper than a "package"

Ok, I've made some calls and checked some things out.

On both travelocity and orbitz I can't find a flight cheaper than 300 dollars a person, anyone know a better place to go? (Either greensboro or Raleigh , NC)

I called the MGM grand, and on a trip that we arrived on saturday, and checked out the next saturday morning, the average room price for the cheapest room was about $150 bucks. Now they're charging us an extra 25 dollars per person (since we have four) so thats a room rate of about 200 dollars.

Which still comes out to about the 600-700 dollar price range of the package deals I have found.

We don't want to stay at the hilton, since its most of our first times to vegas, and we do want something rather nice and I think about 600 for airfare an accomodations is in our price range, however if we could find something in a good location with equal or better quality of course we'd stay there. Any suggestions?

When you're looking for flights, make sure not to specify dates and pick the flexible option. the flights really come down in price if you're willing to fly at odd times. Also, the really cheap prices are from major airports.

My favorite "bargain but nice"-type hotel is Ballys. It's superbly located (right across from the Bellagio) and the rooms are nicer than you'll find in more expensive hotels. Worth a call for sure.

I'm also planning a trip, as I mentioned below... and I have noticed quite a few changes from 2000 - the last time I went.

Namely - the flights are horrendously expensive now. We flew return for ~230CDN last time, including AIF and what not. This time, I'm hard pressed to find a flight under 300CDN, without taxes! Its astounding to me. The only thing I can think of is to look for specials closer to the day... I'm not quite sure what I'm going to end up doing yet. All I know is that I haven't found a decent flight anywhere - direct, discount or through an agency... and I have looked high and low. I'm actually considering buying points off of someone, if possible to fly it. The other thing I have noticed is that flights have been greatly reduced - this means that flying midweek is now a premium. Moving the dates back and forth may help somewhat. (even +/- a day on either end)

As for hotel rooms, it depends what you are looking for. If you just need a place to crash, my last trip was an Imperial special - four guys, cost us less than 120 bucksCDN for the 3 nights we stayed - that 120/4/3, or about 10$ a night! And that was over the Canada day weekend, which is far from a dead time. On the other hand, its the worst place on the strip, even if the location is pretty good.

Places to check are, probably in order:

*The hotel sites themselves.
*Those discount places (hotels.com, ect)
*Hotwire (http://www.hotwire.com) - I'm not a huge fan, but if you just want to sleep on the strip, it works.
*Priceline (http://www.priceline.com) - which I'm also not a fan of, but can work. Just watch their 'on the strip' definition. You can check out www.biddingfortravel.com for a lot of advice.

Incidently, you can probably grab a spreadsheet I had thrown together for work for the prices and airfare. A lot of numbers are 'made up' to a certain degree, but its still useful to go through (and its canadian too, so it has the exchange rate and what not). Geocities is being a pain now, but it should be at http://www.geocities.com/pt_gatsby/vaca1.zip

What is important to note is that the more people are going, the most important airfare is - look at it this way, every dollar in airfare is 4x the loss, while every dollar in hotel is 1/4 the loss. For four people, you could just about justify driving down (if you aren't east coast, anyway). It would cost you some 200$, divided 4 ways. That's far away from $1400 divided 4 ways! In any case, the prices listed on my spreadsheet are for Dec 14 to Dec 18th - the slowest part of the year - and midweek - the best time to go. Airfare was estimated.

The budget I'm working within is $1000 CDN, and I'm well within that for my 5 (maybe 6) nights, even with the airfare. Since I'm including food and the venetian with only two people, you should be able to make it for somewhat less, even if it is going to be a fairly peak time.

The air/hotel is the cheapest part of vegas...you don't have to take a cab....your best bet is getting a limo...call bell trans......it is like 40 bucks an hour and a cab ride from the strip to downtown is about 25 bucks anyway so why not go in a limo plus there are 4 of you to split it if y'all have to split it. That is just my opinion...and if your friends haven't been there, you can take a tour and have drinks in the limo for awhile too.

I'm planning a trip to vegas for Nov. I've found tickets on travelocity from Vancouver Canada (return) for $200 / person and some else here posted about a suite you rent for the week for $189 (with kitchen). That's like $300 each with taxes.

You have to be willing to search for deals and fly at weird times (4 am), but you can get and stay there pretty cheap.

Lucky Lady (ies?) has room for $30 a night. I know its not upscale, but all you really need is a place to crash every other night.

That sounds like a lousy deal. Places like Luxor and MGM typically charge around $80 a night mid-week and double that on weekends, although during spring break/march madness it's probably higher (and at other times lower). Not sure where you're flying from, but any way you look at it it seems high.

You're almost always better off just booking directly through the hotels and airlines, through their websites. The more people you have in a package deal, the worse the price, since it's "per person" (usually makes it a scam).

Whether you need to cab everywhere or walk depends on where you're staying and where you're going. If it's Bellagio, Mirage, Monte Carlo for the poker rooms, anywhere between those 3, MGM, Ballys/Paris, Caesars, Flamingo, and a few others are easy walking distance.

You can e-mail me at ecotham@yahoo.com if you have more detailed questions, I know from all things Vegas and can help out.

Mandalay Bay Poker room is a very nice, upscale room and they spread 4-8 w/ 1/2 kill and 10/20 HE. 1-5 stud. The staff is friendly and they are very atttentive. You will like it, I am sure. It is one of the nicer rooms in town.

I agree with laredo on the quality of MB-- i play there regularly. You can call the poker room direct for the poker rate which of course is based on projected
occupancy. They are just completing an all-suite tower, which could take some price pressure off the regular rooms. The poker room at Monte Carlo is also very nice and they have started spreading 2-4 hold-em because of the demand. Space available, their mid week poker rate can be as low as $69 and $ 49 in mid-December.

As for the hotel in general- it is a beautiful property, one of the best in Vegas. The rooms are great (they have the "big bathroom" with the seperate shower/bathtub), the hotel is nice and clean, the restaurants are great, you really can't go wrong here. Poker room is very small but nice.

I was in Vegas during the summer of 2002 with my friends. We had the package, flying from NY, staying at MGM. Four per room for three nights. The cost was about $400-450 per person, which I thought was reasonable. But, it was possible to find a cheaper deal for about $350. We did stay during the weekend and I am not sure how seasons compare, but I would say something like $550 per person would be reasonable for you.

I've been to vegas many times and stayed at all the majors and cannot remember what any of the rooms looked like...I am hardly ever in the room...either playing in the casino or out drinking with the guys or in the book watching the game.

Even though staying on the strip is cool if money is of issue check out this site and stay at a cheaper hotel. http://www.cheapovegas.com/index.php

Also check into some of the all inclusive charter airlines/hotel packagers and see if you can grab the flight alone...many times they fly with less then a full plane and you can grab the flight alone.
