I need a SPANKING!, socal_1111, 18. Oct 2003 20:30

Wow, I suck lately. Played $100/$200... uhhhhh.... I mean $1/2 (easy to get confused LOL).

I'm on button's right, dealt 10,10... everyone folds to me so I decide to raise hoping to maybe buy the button and make the blinds pay to play... Button does fold, SB calls, BB folds EP calls. BB rarely defended and the SB was relatively tight and thought she would need pretty good cards to call two bets. Still thought I had the best hand pre-flop.

Flop came 442... SB bet, EPcalled, I raised for info. from her and boy did I get it... She RERAISED, EP reluctantly called... I paused from shock, but called. Looking back, that's where I should've mucked? The table had been pretty passive, so I should've known I was beat. But for some reason I couldn't lay it down.

Turn was 7... SB bet... EP folded... and I, knowing (90%) I was beat had a rush of Testosterone and "knew" I was going to catch my 10 on the river (such an idiot- I never chase like that)... I called.

River was no help to me... SB bet of course and I just couldn't lay it down... called. Board: 4427x... I held 10,10... she turned over 4,6o!!

I just couldn't believe she called two bets w/ 4,6o from SB. Oh well, got me. It took me 2 1/2 hours to get ahead 5 BB and one hand to lose 20. I was dust. I'm not as upset that she got me as I am that I continued w/ the hand. That seems to be my M.O: Play well for most of the session, but have one big and bad hand and lose so much of what I worked for. In such low limits, it's so difficult to get that back w/out another couple of hours. Yell at me now!!! Tell me to quit this game since I continue to lose $$ in such a low limit. Thank you!

Raising for info when u contain a pair of overcards, doesnt at all make sense. Your not raising for info, but raising what may likely be the winner. But as you say only a fool would make this a 3 bet to go. So you got all the information you needed right there. Mucking those bad boys ASAP.

ok i want to talk about this cause i have done similar things and pretty sure others have too
first you didnt lose that much on this hand *more than you should have more than likely*
2 dollars preflop *your raise*
3 dollars flop *your raise and her reraise*
2 dollars turn *call*
2 dollars river *call*
total of 9 dollars or 4.5 BB so dont think of quitting over this hand
raise before flop kinda standard
flop all things considered pretty reasonable flop for you, you werent raised or reraised on the flop so AA, KK, QQ, JJ are less likely.
raise on the flop thinking quite likely you have the best hand, get reraised, now comes the hard question either give it up here *your drawing to 2* or call til the river to get info.
of the 2 options i think giving it up and going to the next hand is probably best, however you will gain alot of info from this hand about the SB and hopefully put a serious PAY ATTENTION sign over the SB's head.
why if she had AA,KK,QQ,JJ didnt she reraise before the flop to potentially drive out the EP?
if she has a 4 in her hand why in gods name did she call a raise cold *almost* from horrible position?
hopefully you werent on tilt or broke after this hand and were able to watch this person like a hawk and try to get a better read on this person *possible thought you were on steal and got insanely lucky and/or did something totally random*
was the info you gained worth the 2.5 BB you could have saved yourself? *probably nowhere near*
but your here asking and talking about it which is a good thing, just dont beat yourself over the head about it move on and learn for next time.

Mark,

Wow, very good! I thank you for your response! I didn't think about it that way before but definitely will from now on. You're right... I DID gain a lot of info from her. It was just very difficult to see me 10's get beat by a horrible 46o. I seem to be losing hands like this a lot, therefore scaring me off from calling a potential bluff or semi-bluff (which just makes me the best opponent). It adds up, being a chicken, doesn't it???

Thanks again Mark-

You must remember, "tight players...that appear to play everything tight...DON'T always do just that. Many of tight players (me being one of them at times) tend to "change gears" and loosed up for a hand or two every now and then. You cant judge her cards just because she has been playing tight. One would assume that she had high pockets or AK to call 2 bets, but being put on SB or BB and only having to beat out a 2 or 3-handed pot makes it more tempting for a "tight" player to "loosen" up. Either way, whether she had the high pockets or the 4.....either one beat your 10...so muck after her first reraise or even if you chase the turn....muck before river. Pocket pairs 10 and higher sure look pretty but when they dont hit on flop....you have to learn to get rid of them quick or they can seriously burn you. Probably one of the hardest lessones to learn in holdem is getting rid of the "pretty" cards. I have seen so many people lose MEGA money when holding pocket Aces, especially when a pair shows up in flop. You have to assume someone has the 3 of a kind especially when a tight player attacks the pot like that.
