Online collusion?, iceman5, 18. Oct 2003 19:51

Before I found this forum, I read RGP. I stopped reading there because of all the moaning groaning name calling and other moronic behavior. On RGP there is story after story of people acusing other people of colluding (cheating). In the month or so Ive been reading / posting here, I havent read anything about colluding here. Is that because its less prevalent than some people think, or maybe just something people have accepted? Maybe Im naive, or maybe these so called cheaters only play above my limits ($2/$4 and below) but Ive never noticed anything that even remotely resembled the stories I ve heard about. Am I going to have to be on the lookout as I move up in limits? Would anyone like to share an opinion?

I think it happens often and it's nearly impossible to detect. But my guess is that it's not "organized" at lower limits. For the most park, I think "collusion" is two buddies on the phone at the same time they're playing at the same table. One says "I've got pocket fives" and the other says "I've got A5" so the first person decides to fold because his chances of flopping a set just got cut in half.

The message boards include stories of organized teams of colluders playing together on a table to try to beat one or two "victims." If this happens, it must be at higher limits. Such detailed plans wouldn't be cost-efficient at 2/4.

One thing I do to protect myself is avoid online tables with multiple players from the same towns. For example, if I see see 3 players listed as from "Grinnell, IA" (this happened), I figure there's an excellent chance they're all in the same dorm room. (That's one of the reasons I wish UB would start listing hometowns).

Bottom line: it's a risk, yes. But I wouldn't worry that the vast conspiracies are targetting you in 2/4. Come to think of it, I'd rather play with 3 drunk college buddies in Iowa sharing information than 3 solid players anyway!

I play on UB only so far, and didn't realize other sites showed the city as well. Most of my family and friends in town play online now. I grew up playing poker, and when me and my cousin started playing on line, our group of weekend home game friends and family all started too. We try to avoid being on the same table, but as you go up in limits, their are fewer and fewer tables. I guess we can try playing different sites, but oftentimes there are 2 of us at one table. I can't speak for everyone, but most of us are extremely competitive, and more so with each other than anyone else.

I'ld hate to have to constantly defend myself. (and yes, we are talking about that many people, enough to put 2 people on all of the 1/2 dollar 10 person tables at UB)

I almost feel more concern when I see a lot of "undisclosed" locations. Showing the same hometown is an obvious tip-off. Not only do I wish UB would show the towns, but I also wish it could not be disabled.

Hi

While collusion does exist, alot of losing poker players don't like to admit that they're losers. They will blame everyone else, the cards, the chips, the stars, people they don't know, and make up stories of collusion.

ICEMAN5, YOU WERE SMART TO LEAVE RGP BECAUSE OF THOSE STORIES. DO NOT WORRY BECAUSE THERE IS NO COLLUSION. LJH

I think the one thing we can all do to protect ourselves is that anytime you have a credible reason to believe there is collusion going on is to report it to support. Most of the time they won't do anything but if there are enough reports about the same people then I am sure the credible sites would be quick to take action.

Also there are so many games to choose from that there is no reason to risk even 1 bet in game where you have any suspision. If you think something isn't right leave immediately. I have done this many times and I have know idea whether I was right or wrong.

Finally get to know the regular players. I have used this as well when I think there is something wrong I will ask other players about certain players whom I suspect. They can very helpful.

I think this is one area where all "on the level" players need to work together. As online poker grows the integrity of the game is going to be the determing factor to its sucess.

As for RGP... a bunch of wackos if you ask me.
