Limping with Aces...A funny story, mkpoker, 18. Oct 2003 19:39 | ||

| This is a funny but true story of a devious and deceptive play by yours truly, which dovetails nicely with the earlier thread about limping with aces. But a little background is required first... I was playing today at my local B&M at a boring table (slow, passive, and weak). There was no action at all (I had already put in for a table change). What's worse, the player on my right was just plain mean. Rude to other players, rude to the dealers, and rude to the cocktail waitresses and bet runners. She was an all-around unpleasant person that would be extra-satisfying to beat. Twice during the game when she was in the SB and I was in the BB, she asked if I wanted to "chop the blinds," after all other players had folded. I've always thought this is a silly practice...akin to holding up a giant sign that says, "My Hand in the SB Stinks." Both times, I refused. Once she folded and once she called. After she called, I raised (with trash) and she folded. So a bit later, I'm in the BB and see AA. My happiness quickly turns when I see everyone folding. As the action gets to the SB, I lean over and say, "Want to chop the blinds this hand?" Her reaction was predictable (and loud): She shouts to her buddy across the table: "He raised me twice and NOW he wants me to chop the blinds. Hah!" She raises. I call. Truth is, I don't even remember the details of the hand, except that the board was non-threatening and she led and I called through the flop. She bet the turn and I raised (she called) and then she check/called the river. My aces were good, her hand was decidedly mediocre (QT, I think) and I took down a decent pot. After the showdown, she started talking (very loudly) about how bad MY play was! She couldn't believe that I had offered to chop the blinds with a pocket aces? I don't think she realized that I had put her on tilt so badly! I just said "I gave you a fair chance" and left a few hands later. I know that my play risked losing a few bets, but I didn't think I'd get any action if I played out normally. I suppose my play was even weaker than just limping with Aces...but it paid off this time! | ||

| Doesn't it feel good to take down the jackass, and the sophistication of the play is completely lost on them. Congrats | ||

| Hey mk, Well I guess you knew how she was going to react that she would take that ("nice") gesture from you as being a sure sign of holding 'trash' in the BB, as she surely fell for your "BS" hook, line and sinker! (and thank goodness that she did)! ......Great story mk. (and you're right....what's the deal with a player who only wants to chop the blinds IF they don't have a good hand)? That's not how it goes. | Great story. Reminds me of a tourney I played a while ago, it was still the rebuy period and the guy to my right was a maniac with no skills whatsoever, but talked trash, tilted and got into ridiculous pissing matches with others. Another guy at the table was needling him often to try and tilt him, his way of responding would be to raise pre-flop. So a couple of times the rational guy would say something pre-flop like "you're not going to raise me again, are you?" Predictably, the maniac would raise, first guy would reraise, and show down KK or AA. What was truly hilarious was that as soon as the rational guy would say something like that, everyone else would fold, since they knew exactly what it meant. Everyone but the maniac. Eli on 18.
