Caveats of online play, The Fish, 18. Oct 2003 18:47

I have just recently started playing poker online. I started playing at home, moved up to casinos and am now playing online(still playing at casinos of course!!). I must say I do enjoy the variety of games: tournaments, fixed rings games, NL, PL etc....however, I did want to bring up some points and see if they resonated with anyone here....

1). Playing multiple tables.....although at first I thought this was a great idea (why not make as much money as quickley as I can?) ...I soon realized the error of my ways....I never compared playing three tables with the other option....playing just one ......then I realized that I was giving away too many edges by playing multiple tables.....it is just too hard to read hands ......and remember details about players when you are playing 3 tables at a time ....has anyone else found themselves in this same situation? ......or is there anyone who finds their EV per hour is higher when playing multiple tables? ....

2). This next caution is in regard to NL....I was talking to a friend at the casino.....and she told me ....the best way to make money at NL is to wait for premium hands .....i.e./ AA, AKsuited, AQ suited .etc....and don't play anything but those premium hands......at first that sounded like it would be correct play....but then I got to thinking about it .....and in fact .....I believe this to be a poor strategy for NL .....although you do want to continue to play tight/aggressive at NL ....I think that you should play a bit looser (depending on the table) ..than you would at a fixed limit with the same kind of players........I say this because of the implied odds at NL .......am I wrong here? .....if so, soneone please set me straight....

3). Finally I played beyond the means of my bankroll.......a cardinal sin .....now I am left at the really, really low limit games ......I suppose you have to learn the hard way ......at least I wont forget this lesson .....my question to other players is: If I am playing NL, what kind of bankroll do I need? ....lets say I want to play $1/$2 NL ....what should my bankroll be?

If anyone got through this whole post .....good work ......I am sure many have been bored to tears already.........anyway .....all comments and critiques are welcome......in fact .....encouraged ......so please feel free to cut me up ......if these ideas are ridiculus

Good luck,
Ben

1) For a long long long long time, I played one table at a time only. Now, sometimes I play one table and sometimes I play two. It really depends on how I feel. If I feel really sharp, like I can really pay attention to two tables, I play them, but if not, then I just play one. My win rate for two tables is higher, but I believe that is partly because I only play two when I really feel good about doing so.

2) The thing about no limit is that the implied odds are greater, but you can also lose a lot more money to a second best hand. If you play a QJ and flop top pair, will you be comfortable putting a lot of money into the pot? Mistakes are much more costly in no limit poker, and for someone who is not very VERY experienced and has excellent hand reading skills, second best hands can really kill you. Most of my no limit play is in tournaments, but when I am in a cash game, I do tighten up a bit from my normal ring game play. Also, note that it is easier to have someone else making the very costly mistake than trying to avoid it yourself.

3) A no limit game with 1/2 blinds is a sizable game. Like I said, I don't play many no limit cash games, but assuming you are beating the game, I'd want about 5000 to play. That should cover you for 50 buy ins (I'm kinda assuming the buy in is 100), but you might even want more. No limit has more swings than fixed limit play. A no limit expert's opinion would probably be better for this part though. Good luck in your games Ben.

1) I only play multiple tables when I want to qualify for a freeroll and I need to get the raked hands in. I assume I make more money playing multiple tables per hour (but not as much per table per hour). The reason I prefer playing just one table is that I play for the art of poker and not the money. To me the enjoyment from this game is knowing every opponent cold and playing perfectly. The money is just a by product of striving to play perfectly every hand, even the ones I'm not in.

2) and 3) shuster answered those the same way I would.

I play multiple tables and my win rate increases proportionately. However I am blessed/Cursed with ADD so doing multiple things at a time is actually easier for me then doing just one thing which is excrutiatingly painful.

With my own limited experience, I've found playing multiple tables generally makes it a lot harder to read the players. BUT... it's a very good way to keep yourself from going on tilt if you keep getting bad hands at one table. If you take on an extra table, you'll have more playable hands. I do find it rather difficult to keep discipline if I'm just NEVER getting anything, but with two tables, you can start to get some action--even at the cost of not being able to read the individual players as well. Also, if one table is working better, you can scrap your bad table and just play the good one.

How about asking "Am I Beat"? This is a question you should ask yourself alot in N/L Hold'em games.
