89s, 8Ts,9Ts.....how are you playing these ?, INSINK, 17. Oct 2003 17:37

The game tends to be loose passive, loose aggresive....LMHLD....you want to be percieved as tight/aggressive, and want respect when you do raise......

I have found that unless you can get in cheap pre flop, these are low probability winning hands....from any position 9-10 handed.......so my tendency has been to muck and wait for the next hand.....

Thoughts, and comments are appreciated........

I want to play these hands in late position when the game is loose both pre and POST flop. Sometimes players are loose preflop but give very little action postflop. Even with some limpers, in such a tight post-flop game I don't see the profit in medium suited connecter. But if I see several limpers in front of me who pay off after the flop, knowing the kind of poor hands they play, I figure 89s probably has about as much chance of winning as the average hand being playd, the price is cheap, and the payoff if I hit is good.

I myself would rather my raises not be respected. I want action from inferior hands. So sometimes I will put in a gambling raise with such holdings, especially if I haven't played a hand in some time.

Late or middle position only and only in a passive game. I don't want to call a raise with these hands because they just aren't strong enough to win w/out improvement. OTB, I might throw in a raise myself if there are 5 callers before me. This may get you a free turn card if the flop misses.

Ideally, you want to flop twopair or a str8 draw (yes, the flush is nice, but it will never be the nuts). IF the flop misses you completely and there is any action, simply fold and wait for a better spot. If u do flop an open end str8 draw and there is an early better and a few callers, go ahead and raise. This will create a biiger pot for you and again may get you a free look on the river if the turn card doesn't help.

Bottom line, game conditions are very important in making these hands profitable for you. In a tight aggressive game, they go in the muck from every position (and I look for a different game too).

Hope this helps.

Steve

Something that I think about is: how aggressive are my opponents on the flop? With medium suited connectors you are most likely going to be looking at a draw (when you hit at all). If the other players in, or still to act behind, are the types to raise and re-raise the flop then I am less inclined to play this sort of hand. If they are more passive on the flop, and especially if they are willing to call my raises later on in the hand, then I like the look of 89s very much more.
