question for poker elders, iceman5, 17. Oct 2003 11:28

Lets say you have A4 from the BB. Flop comes A Q 6. There are 2 other callers and no was preflop raise. I assume the correct play is to bet out. If the next guy raises, is there any way to determine in he has a higher ace or if he has, lets say KQ and is trying to get a free card? I folded in this situation. Is it correct to bet out even if you already decided you will fold to a raise? I think so because you might take the pot right there. Maybe you should fold sometimes and reraise sometimes?

I would suggest that you'll get more responses if you didn't call people 'elders' *g*
Everything is going to depend upon your knowledge of your opponents. Whether you bet out or not, whether he is trying to gain a free card - no template can answer the questions. I do agree however that it is correct to bet out even if you have decided that you will fold to a raise. I also like the fact that you are thinking in advance and have a plan - do not let the plan become rigid though. If new information becomes available be prepared to make adjustments - which sounds obvious but is often ignored.

I wouldn't *always* fold to a raise in this spot, you're just painting a target on yourself. Sometimes yes, but always, definately not. Yes, you have little chance of improving, but sometimes you have to make a "loose call" to avoid becoming a pigeon. S&M go over this in HEPFAP and talk about a similar situation where you have an underpair and your flop bet gets raised. You're drawing to 2 outs, but if you fold the flop every time you get raised, you're just asking to be messed with.

That said, this is one of those situations that requires finesse and like Angel said, no simple template can answer it. The best way to learn these situations is experience. Try to learn your opponents and what they raise with and then think about your own holding. If your opponent is an observant player who you believe would only raise with an ace, then the best play might be to call the raise and fold on the turn, because an observant player might pick up on your weakness and start playing back at you more. If your opponent never paid any attention to what you might have, then you could let it go for a raise. My suggestion would be to post hands where you are in these kinds of situations, including your impressions of your opponents, and your thought processes throughout the hand. You will learn very fast when you have other people critiquing the way you think.

Unless you know your opponent extremely well and he is extremely predictible, folding to a raise here would be a big mistake.
The games I play may be different than yours, but what I'd do here would be to check call the flop, and depending on the player, may checkraise the turn.

The way I figure it - and this is true for a lot of similiar situations - there is no clear cut best move. So I mix it up, confident that whatever I try is probably not a real big mistake. In this situation I will sometimes bet and fold to a raise. Sometimes check call all the way - especially heads up, sometimes check call and bet the turn, sometimes bet call a raise and bet the turn, sometimes bet call a raise and fold to a bet on the turn. I try to fit the move to my feel for the situation. Sometimes I look like an idiot and sometimes I feel like a hero. In any case I will be keeping them guessing and be giving myself a reasonable chance for a shot at a pot I feel i have some equity in, without overexposing myself to the risk of more chips.
