| For all of you psychological people out there, this one is for you. I am in college and in the process of getting a minor in pscyh. I am doing a minor bc I think it would help me understand people more and it will be easier to read them. I have TWO more classes to take and I am just wondering which would be the best two to take for the reason previously stated. I can't trust my advisors because they don't know poker and what all goes into it. So I am entrusting you guys to be my new advisor. Thanks in advance. Classes to choose from are: 1. Child Development 2. Social Psychology 3. Developmental Psych 4. Cognitive Psych 5. Psych of Learning 6. Psych of Personality 7. Motivation and Emotion | ||

| I would have to agree with angel on social psychology.......social psych discusses a lot of interesting concepts regarding groups. I haven't taken motiavtion and emotion ......I would take either that or cognitive psych ......child development and developmental psych I believe are the same, or quite similar, both of which are interesting but not very helpful with poker. Social psych, in my opinion is a must ...as for the other two.....I think either one is pretty good... Good luck, Ben | ||

| If the cognitive psych is anything like the one I took it won't be helpful. My original inclination was for Motivation and Emotion and Social, but I could see an argument for Psych of Personality too. | ||

| I honestly doubt that any college course in psychology will help much at the poker table. Instead, rely on your own experience, observation, and thinking. | ||

| Hey I took Spanish as a minor. I can ask for extra cheese on my enchiladas and ask for the worm in my shots of tequila. But seriously, the best poker players spent their time observing people and getting into REAL people's heads. A textbook and a lecture won't do that. Work the customer service at a department store. You'll learn more about people than you would from any class. | ||

| I was discussing, on another site, about how much poker rules your life and one of the posters said that he has catagorized everyone in the office....IE Jerry in accounting seems pretty weak tight. | ||

| Can't speak a lick of Mandarin, although I can survive in a Cantonese restaurant. LOL. A friend taught me Mexican poker last night and played in a little tourney ($5 entry, no buy in) and outlasted a few of the "more knowledgeable" players. The dealers were ALL Asian, the players were Mexican or Filipino (more Mexican than Filipino) and everyone except the dealers understood Spanish. A couple of the players teased the dealer..."hey I thought ALL Chinese understood espanol!" while pointing at me. The menudo at this place was awesome by the way. | ||

| I have a degree in psych (although I focused on neuropsych), and my wife to be is finishing her masters. I don't think any will truely help you a great deal, and I've never had a "motivation and emotion". That one sounds interesting perhaps. Social psych may help, depending on the professor and material. It is the most likely to help. Odds are learning theory won't help a whole lot, as it will go over more pavlovian and skinner'esk theories which don't apply much at all. Child development and developmental psych wont help any (they aren't the same, although many concepts covered in Child development would be covered early on in developmental psych). Psych of personality will probaly go over a number of theories, none of which will help. These will cover the gambit of humanistics (like rogers, the "well how does it make you feel" BS) and freudian (otherwise known as fraudian) BS. You will probaly hit on some anna freud, jung, horner, adler. To me, an extremely boring class. That leaves with cognitive psych, my favorite on the list. Although, again, I don't think it would help at all. It is extremely interesting, depending on the professor, though. Usualy covers thought processes, theories on how our brains work, memory concepts, etc. Much more biological ideas as opposed to hypothetical, at least when compared to most other psych courses (mind you, it is still hypothetical). Social psych is a very fun class in some ways, and would be the most likely to help you. Some of the studies people have done, especialy in the 50's and 60's, are just great. They screwed with so many people's heads in such comical ways. Candid Camera has borrowed some of them even. The only other class I could think of that isn't listed there that could help would be a Stress Management class, perhaps. If you learn a few techniques to help control stress and anger, that would help more than any of the above :) Sorry it is so long. | ||
