Entering a HE game in the blind ?, The Oleo Ranch (A Cheap Spread in Texas), 16. Oct 2003 15:50

Last night I am at a 9-seat HE game at a cardroom. I am in the 2-seat having a terrible run of cards. We have just finishd a hand with me in the big blind, when the 7-seat leaves. I asked for that seat, so I move to the 7-seat where I have to post another 3$ big blind, and my 1$ small blind that I just left.

A new player comes into my seat. There is a big tourney going on and some of the dealers are new to this cardroom. The dealer then proceeds to let him post a big blind to come in between the "real" big blind and the button. I have never seen this happen, and I spoke up, the dealer called the floor, and they allowed it.

I have never seen anyone come into a game and be allowed to post between the big blind and the button. I have always understood that you must wait for the button to pass. Am I wrong? Do different places have different rules? If I sat down at a new game as the button comes to me, could I post and come in on the button?

Thanks for your comments.

Some card rooms will let you "buy the button". A new player (or player returning who has missed the big blind) may post both blinds in the seat to the left of the button, in order to get the button the next hand. This has no effect on someone making up a missed blind, or posting a late position blind such as from changing seats.

Every house is a little different.

Where I play, you can come in on any position except the SB or the button, and you don't have to buy the button. When you sit down, if the BB is close, or if you would have to post it on the hand that is about to be dealt, you can choose to wait for the button to pass, and come in on the cutoff instead.

Also, the situation of your move would have been handled this way: you would have been made to play up to your button, then move, at which time you would be in the SB, so you would have to wait a hand before coming back in when the button passes you again.

Yeah...I just sat down at my first B&M game this past weekend and I was very surpised (after playing online) NOT to have to post a BB when coming into the game...after sitting down the dealer asked me if I wanted a hand now, or if I would wait, and I said I want a hand now, and proceeded to post the big blind, and she said I didn't have to, and I got my cards and played from them on...is that strange? (its a brand new poker room)
