This question is for the casual player. Not the poker pro and not from the part time pro who relies on poker profit to supplement their income.

But for the casual player, LIKE ME, how much money do you set aside for Poker relative to How much income you make. And what limits do you play relative to your income and Savings? Since Ive started playing 5 months ago, Ive deposited about $500 in my online account. I have withdrew around $2000 since then, and my current account is about $300.

It's hard to say I guess, since I'm not an online player I don't have to worry about depositing money into accounts. I have a decent income and I play 6-12 mostly, plus tournaments, so I have enough to play and not worry about it too much.

I do not use any of my banking salary to pay for poker. A couple of years ago I started working summers at a traveling carnival (setting up rides, running them, & then tearing them down) to start my poker bankroll. I do not touch that money for anything but poker. I mainly play $4-$8 or $5-$10 at Foxwoods. I have deposited some money at UB but I do not play anything other than $1-$2, $2-$4 or tourneys online. I do not know about anyone else but I cannot play at my best online. I am about even, maybe down a little online but way up live.

I only recently have a designated poker bankroll. Both me and my wife are blessed with jobs that pay us enough that either one of us could lose our job and we could still live comfortably.

The first time I played live I took about $300 out of savings. I put $100 in play and won. I took the $200 I didn't put in play and paid for a round of golf at TPC Scottsdale and have turned the $100 into almost $300 in three sessions (2 wins, 1 exactly broke even.) So, that $300 is my live poker bankroll.

For online, I bought in with $25 and am slowly growing it. Once I have 300 BBs, I move up a limit. Slow and steady wins the race.

The general rule is that you need a bankroll of 200-300 big bets available for the limit you are playing, assuming that you are a favorite in the game. This amount will allow you to suffer through stretches of poor cards and still have enough to play. So, if you were playing 5-10, then an adequate bankroll would be 2-3k.

I designed web sites as a hobby and have used that money to bankroll my poker.

I mainly use it to open accounts and then play with the bonus money. So far I haven't touched my original bankroll. Once all my bonus money is released I withdraw my orignial deposit and play only with the bonus money and winnings.

Started $5 SnGs. Made small profits, mostly a learning experience.
Now at $10 SnGs. Doing well.
Played 5 $30 SnGs. Broke even. Will start playing those next month if my $10 profits continue.

Looking to buy into some multi table tourneys.

Play $50 NL to collect rake to release my bonus cash.

I kind of fell into playing poker as a hobby really just on a whim. I always played home games with my buddies which was more games of chance than poker (3 card guts, louie, night baseball, with an occasional 7 card stud just about everything wild thrown in).

One night I, like many others, was watching the WPT and surfing the web and I saw a commercial for party.... it peaked my interest so I was just going to check out the play money tables to kill some time. Well I couldn't get on a play money table since they were all full so I deposited $50 and figured I'd stop playing when I lost it. Well I haven't lost it yet. And actually this is the first hobby I've ever had that pays my car payment!

In regards to limits, I generally play 2/4 or 1/2 online and 2/4 or 4/8 at Foxwoods. My game selection is based on my bankroll and what I feel comfortable with and doesn't correspond to my salary. My rule with my poker bankroll is that once the money leaves my bankroll to be used for daily life stuff it can never go back in and if my bankroll ever goes to zero then I'm all done. This helps me to stay focused and keep it as just a hobby.
