I am quite new to B&M play, and was curious what the answer to this question is:

Can you call ahead and get on the list or do you have to physically show up at the poker room to get on the list? I know you have to be there when they call you, but if I know there will be a 2-3 hour wait, it sucks to have to sit around and wait the whole time.

All responses appreciated, especially those that in some way mock me. But someone please give me an accurate answer.

Thanks

Hokie-

Not stupid at all. I think it depends where you play. My home casino (Foxwoods) used to have the option of calling in 1 hour beforee you arrived and then when you got there, they would put you to the top of the list. However, they have since cancelled that policy because their poker room is so jammed that there is generally a 3 hour wait from walk-ins. My advice is to go in the morning and get in a game because after noon at most places you will wiat for some time.

Thanks man. I was hoping for something along the lines of call-ahead seating, but I guess they hope we wander over to a craps table while we are waiting...

OMG,

I havent been to Foxwoods in a bit and so I am glad that I havent seen that yet, 3 hours my Lord, whats a poor guy to do all that time. Why in the heck dont they expand the room? I go back so far that I remember when it first opened and the first time it expanded and Im not really that old but they never realized the way that the poker room was going to take off and payoff for the casino.
I gotta get up there soon just to see it because I will be leaving the East Coast soon, maybe never coming back too so Id like to see it once b4 I go, I guess I can stay there now although I hope room rates arent too bad and maybe, just maybe guests get treated a little better? : )
At least you would have somewhere to wait and I am sure they would call your room and wait for ya to make it over to the room to your seat.

Hey Shorn,

I just went to Foxwoods a couple weeks ago on a Friday night, called ahead no problem and was at the top of the list when I got there...

Maybe it depends on the day or person or something?

ReMMy-

That is strange. I was there last in September and was told by the PR manager that you couldn't call ahead any more. Maybe they got so much flack from people that the changed the rules back. Or, it could be that only on Saturday and Sunday do the rules apply.

Well, it never hurts to know the boardman (maybe slip him/her an occasional chip or two), but everywhere I know of you have to be there to get on the list. It's not fair to the guy who walks in, sees 50 names on the board and open seats, then being told "I can put you on the list, but it's a 4hr wait".
Would you go back to this Casino? Not me!

Hi Victor,

The problem with slipping the boardman a chip or two is that, it's not allowed in all of the cardrooms. It is a very nice gesture in the casinos that allow it, but in Atlantic City and in Foxwoods, it isn't allowed whatsoever, and they can lose their jobs if they accept any tokens $$ of appreciation. All the casinos have so many different rules and regulations, just as in AC you can call up and put your name on the list, whereas in Vegas, you can not. Is it a good thing?...well it is if you're the person who's doing the calling. Is it fair to the people who are there waiting?....it doesn't seem to be; but the more that we 'do' know in what the casinos allow.....the more perks we can have as well; and I (personally) would have no problem making that call. So before you go to the casino, call them up and see if you can put your name on the list. (but if you just happen to walk in unknowingly.....then your s*** out of luck, and I understand how that person must feel).

They don't leave seats open, they continue to fill them w/ players that are there. I assume they will leave you at the top of the list for at least a short while...

When I got there our names were sitting at the top, and names below them had been crossed off. I told them I had arrived and they seated us w/ the next available seats...

As far as not going back to a casino because you saw that happen, I would think that if you planned on coming back, you would probably remember that and call ahead yourself, and if you weren't planning on coming back anyways(one time visit) then who cares...

I've only been to one casino (Hollywood Casino in Bossier City) and they let you call in while you aren't there. In fact, if you show up before other call-ins who aren't present you can jump them and get in the game faster. That's my limited experience.

it differs from casino to casino----it also provkes a strong argument between the marketing oriented people and the operations people. The operatrions people are convinced it will create chaos when people who have been waiting and eyeball the wait list see a player jump in front of them. The counter argument from the marketing people is that people are more likely to come play if they can make phone reservations, like in a restaurant. If you have a marketing oriented manager, you'll have reservations. If you have an operations oriented manager, you will not.
