OK, so all the press in SI and other spots has been nice. But today, poker has hit the conservative (sorry noiseboy) mainstream. There is an article in the Wall Street Journal today on the first page of section B discussing Randy Peterson's effort to show that poker is a skill game. It is also quoted as saying that the number of poker players online worldwide is close to 3 million.

And on a soap opera, Andrew W, 16. Oct 2003 07:16

I am sad to know this, but my wife is home on maternity leave and getting re-hooked on One Life to Live on ABC. There is a Vegas side storyline, and one of the characters from Landview is going to Vegas for a big poker tournament.

When it's on the soaps, beware.

... the same thing that happens when any trend starts on a soap opera - it will be mis represented, misunderstood and mythologized.

I guess beware is over stating the case - just to say that your typical soap opera treatment won't necessarily be that accurate.

Actually the trend started on the Internet, gained momentum because of the WPT, increased momentum because of expanded coverage of WSOP, and now is moving into the celebrity realm with the Celebrity Poker Showdown on Bravo, which was filmed this week at the Palms.Lets hope that this flood of new players is treated right when they hit the B&M cardrooms.
