| Yesterday, while playing $50-$100 holdem, I watched this hand play out. The SB and BB are both experienced players and have played many hours with each other. Two players limped and the SB completed....the BB checked. The flop came A-6-7 with 2 spades. The SB, who is experienced and fairly straight forward, lead. The BB called and the other two players mucked. I thought the BB had a draw. Even if the BB had flopped a big hand ( a set or two pair) I felt he would not have sat on his hand since the board had lots of draw potential. The turn brought a red ace and the SB lead again and was called by the BB. I thought it was certain the BB had a draw and I also assumed the SB knew this. The BB called the bet with no hesitation.....the BB knew the SB was conservative and I strongly doubted the BB would go into payoff mode with a 6 or 7 in his hand without giving it a lot of thought. The river card was an offsuit 9 making the board A-6-7-A-9 with no suit. The SB lead and the BB RAISED. The SB paid and was shown the 8,5 offsuit that won this pot. I was surprised by the SB's bet on the river ONLY because I felt his lone opponent was almost certain to have a draw. The SB had to know from all their playing hours together that the BB was unlikely to pay off with an under pair when the SB lead an ace high flop into 3 opponents and then continued to bet it. I think it was an error to bet the river especially if ( as he did) the SB was going to pay the hand off with 3 aces if he was raised. It looks wimpy to check...but it hurts to get raised and say to yourself "I should have known that!!!" Good luck!!! GRANT PITTMAN | ||

| I can definitely see what you mean that a check might be good on the end. The SB might have thought that the BB was on an A with a lower kicker just calling him down. My guess is that the SB had either AK or AQ and reasoned that A with worse kicker would call one more bet on the end. I agree that checking is better because the BB can show you any two cards, and he's definitely made it this far with something. If he's on a busted draw he can't call, but if he made is draw, then you are throwing your money down a hole. | ||

| I 100% agree with this conceptually. You only bet the river if you think an inferior hand is going to call. That includes the times your hand is very large. That said, few players have the discipline to make a check like that. The thought process is long and complicated. Making such plays (checking) is what separates a player of Grants caliber from the also-rans in the professional poker world. Life is Good :-) Roy Cooke on 15. | I agree it is a great example of why checking on the river is often the right play. But I have another question: Why call even 1/2 bet with 85o from the SB and only 2 limpers? I'd have thrown it away without a second thought. I'd play 87 for sure or 85s. But an off-suit two-gapper? Maybe if there were many callers...but not just 2. | ||

| It was the BB who had the 85o...he played for free. | ||
