Learned the hard way, Don't Slow Play Trip Aces, Andrew W, 14. Oct 2003 15:13

I got knocked out of a SNG with this hand. I got greedy. Check this out....

I get dealt AA - two callers of the BB before me, I make pot sized bet, get one caller, others fold.

I am on 950 chips, having played blinds and one other hand preflop. Other player is chip leader with 1570 or so.

Flop (board: As 3d Ks):

Yeah baby!! Even KK goes down to me now.
I'll slow play it and draw him in...... bet minimum of 20 - he calls.

Turn (board: As 3d Ks Jd):

Excellent, If by chance my opponent has JJ and figures me for AK, I will get paid big - time to bet - pot sized bet of 310.

He Calls

River (board: As 3d Ks Jd 5d):
ilikerisk checks. revlovejoy goes all-in for 510.
ilikerisk calls.
Tournament all-in showdown -- players show:
ilikerisk shows Td 8d.
revlovejoy shows Ad Ac.

Lost to a runner runner flush. I don't know why he called pot sized pre-flop with that, but once he was in, I gave him no reason to fold before turn. Turn gave him a flush draw, and he went for it.

I sat there flabbergasted and realized my mistake. I should have played it harder and tried to win a smaller pot. I got greedy and tried to suck in a big pot, but gave the man a chance to catch lightning.

I even asked in the chat box 0- had I gone all in earlier, you'd have folded right? He said - oh yeah.

So, as I now realize I know NOTHING about finesse play in NL, where and how would y'all have played that one?

Showdown:

ilikerisk has Td 8d 3d Jd 5d: flush, jack high.
revlovejoy has Ad Ac As Ks Jd: three aces.

Hand #522888-11 Summary:

No rake is taken for this hand.
ilikerisk wins 1950 with flush, jack high.

{all opinion below, is up for critique, as I am still striving to improve at no limit myself}
That is the problem with trying to snare with the slowplay, some days you get the bear... You were going for maximum extraction, and he caught the river. Im a fan of trapping, if river had paired the board with his suit you would have been set... I've been screwed on trying a similar play, and just chalk it up being the nature of the game.
All that said, nothing wrong with smaller pots, but bigger pots are nicer. If you are going to try for the larger pot, you may wind up feeling like you are playing limit hold'em with people sucking out. Unless you flop a boat or make it at the turn, the river card should become very expensive to see especially with the flush draw a reality. A switch in plan is necessary when the nature of the board changes and you are playing rational sane people that would rather stay in the game.

I learned that same lesson myself after having trip aces cracked by a straight. I checked on the flop trying to trap. I then checked on the turn(that is where I went wrong). I then bet on the river, which he rose me and found I gave him a straight, trapping the trapper. From this failure, I learned what every member here probably knows: If you are going to trap, make sure you know your opponent will try to bet out or bluff the pot, which then you can reraise to punish their bet. Thinking about it now, I could have taken down that 500$ pot instead of trying to get greedy.

Slowplay once the blinds hit 100-200.... not before, its simply not worth it as you can tell.

You can bet that one strong because some of the sit n go players will call you with definately the other ace... some a king... and some will call with like any combination of QJ10 hoping for that straight. You aren't going to double up against anyone holding the QJ10 hands unless they hit it... meaning you get nothing more and can only lose everything.... so there's little reason to let them draw.
