A key hand in the Tournament!!!!, Eman, 14. Oct 2003 11:59

I forgot to mention this hand from last nights $20 buy in NLHE tourney on Party. There was 63 players left. Top 60 get paid. Im below average stack with around 6000. Blinds 300/600. Low stacks are trying to hang on to get in the money. I get dealt 99 UTG. I call hopin to see the flop cheap. Two callers + the blinds. (5 way flop). Flop comes 248 rainbow. I bet 1000, all fold but a the table chip leader(huge Stack). Turn is 7 (completing rainbow). I read the chip leader for overcards i bet another 1000 and he goes raises me allin!!!! He had over 30000 in chips. I call and he flips over AJ and a rag hits and I take down the pot. He started saying that I made a bad call with just a pair. Saying that to risk being out of the money on just a pair was not a smart play. Other people at the table were sying the same thing "how can you call that bet with just pckt 9's". But I thought that was a rather easy call for me. Just my opinion. Would anyone else make the call?

You had him read correctly and played accordingly. If he wanted to push you off the hand he should have done it earlier. I think the bottom line here is that he was upset that his steal attempt failed.

You had an overpair and there was no real threat for a straight or flush. Like so many people have said, if you want to win tournaments you need to be willing to make calls like this (and then get a little lucky to hold up/draw out). As long as you are confident in your read I think this was a great play.

Sure, hell, at least you had a pair, unlike your opponent. A lot of book players say the same thing about some of Moneymaker's calls in the WSOP. If you have a read that your opponent is on overcards, and you have the courage of your convictions to go with that read, I say more power to you. In addition, the argument that you shouldn't risk busting out of the money is kinda silly when you only have a small amount invested. I say it's better to always play for the top few spots, that where virtually all of the money is. To get there, you can't play safe all of the time.

I agree. Perfect example was Moneymakers read on Dutch Boyd. MM had pckt 3's and Dutch had (I think) KQ. Flops was all rags. Dutch went all-in and MM called. MM at that point had less than Dutch and would have busted out of the tourney if Dutch caught a KorQ.

The people at your table needed to shut their pie-holes. Don't you just love backseat drivers? It's even worse when they tell you you're stupid after you LOSE the hand. This past weekend I called a big bet on the river, from a guy who I was positive was trying to make a steal. I had bullets with a big kicker, he ended up with two small pair. Not two seconds later I see "That was a bad call, Bart" in the chat window. The guy then proceeds to tell me that "People don't try to steal pots in online poker," and explains that when someone bets big on the River, it's because they've got the best hand. I fired back with "That's interesting, because I stole the last pot from you with Jack high." He quit giving advice after that.

Anyway, you actually made more money on this hand than I would have. As soon as the flop hit I would have pushed all in, not wanting to see an overcard come on the Turn. With my luck the gorilla would have folded, and I would have ended up with a measley pot instead of doubling up like you did.

Well played.

The money in these tournaments is only like double the buyin... and thats likely all you'll get with your stack if you muck it.... its obvious he was a chipleader and taking advantage of a shorter stack trying to get in the money... and either had a hand like A8 or overcards. It was actually a silly bluff because when a shortstack that close to the money bets strong, he's not likely to lay down his hand.

He could have been slowplaying the big pocketpair.... but its worth the risk at this point, play for first, not for 51st

Furthermore, once you pushed in 1K + 1K, your stack is down to 4K and you admitted to being one of the shortest stacks. Fold here and now you are even shorter. When will you have the chance for an overpair again? Push it in and hope he doesn't suck out on you.
