Strange HE bet structure- comments on play?, Easy E, 14. Oct 2003 11:40

This is from the Beginner's forum on 2+2. Someone was asking whether to play this game he'd been invited to (I advised him not to).

Here's the structure: "It's dollar ante, with everyone seeing the flop for free.
Like the fish say, any two cards can win. Betting is $1-$5 on the flop and turn, pot limit on the river. "

if you were going to play in a game like this, would you treat it as a pot-limit game with a heavy emphasis on cheaply-acquired implied odds and therefore increase the weaker drawing hands?
Or does seeing the flop for "free" and the assumed aggression on the flop mean that you would tighten up instead?

Primarily, you would have to outplay your opponents post-flop, since the pre-flop setup aspects are completely gone... as well as are most reads on the flop.

Any thoughts?

Don't yell at ME! It's not MY silly game!

However, when I was thinking about it, I surmised that people with superior post-flop playing skills (as well as pot-manipulation skills) could do really well here, but with a large amount of variance to risk.

On top of this, the 2+2 poster implied that this bartenders' game would give him a fair number of inebriated opponents to try to take advantage of....

I think the better player would have a HUGE advantage in this game; especially if there were a large number of novice players at the game. I would think it would play a lot like Omaha in that the NUTS are going to be out there a lot more often than a normal game.
Very simple, draw to the nuts, hit the nuts, bet the pot on the end, make fortune, retire early, write poker books to sustain over-indulgent lifestyle.

I reckon that you could beat this game, assuming that you were a better poker player than your opponents of course. Looks as if drawing hands would go up in value and holdings such as top pair would plummet. If you could persuade them to play omaha high with this structure then I think that you would have a fantastic evenings entertainment.
