LOL, this might've been a really bad play!?, noiseboy, 13. Oct 2003 17:01

So I'm playing 15/30 at lunch today, and I get dealt KQs. A few people fold to me in MP, so I raise. I get three people calling, one from MP, LP and one of the blinds. The flop comes AQ9 and the Blind checks, I check, the MP player checks and the LP bets. The blind folds, and I call because I think the LP player might be weak or I might just have been tilting a bit. If I really thought the guy was weak and just betting position, I should have raised to hopefully drive out the other players. This is a bad call, I'm almost sure, because the guy is somewhat loose but he's an "any-A" type player, who probably has me beat. The guy after me who I suspect is on a draw calls. I suspect he is just drawing because I know him from tourneys and he plays very aggressive with any kind've made hand.

Anyway, the next card is a straight card, a J I believe, and I get a tell on the player that bet originally, that he didn't like the card. Nothing specific, he just stared a little too long at the flop and looked concerned. Anyway, I bet out, a completely irrational move, just based on my read that the flop bettor was weak and that the other player was drawing. I'm taking advantage of the fact that I reluctantly called the flop (a big mistake) to represent the card as helping me. Yes, I know it's quite "hollywood". Since I'm leading into the bettor, after making a crying call on the flop, my hope is that he will put me on two pair or the str8.

Anyway, to my dismay the MP player still called, but it worked to my advantage because the LP player folded his Ax after much deliberation. It actually worked out well because if it was just us two, he might have called.

I check the river, expecting the MP player to show me one of the hands I tried to represent, then I'd either laydown or make a crying call. To my surprise, he just tells me he missed and that my hand is good!

Anyway the Ax player wasn't miffed, he said I made a really good bet on the turn; however, though it worked out, I'm not sure if the entire hand wasn't a big fiasco on my part. I mean, I had the read that the LP player was weak so I just bet out thinking I might take it right there, but I would've had to fold immediately to any action.

Anyway, let it be said that I don't just post the hands where I play good! After all, the entire point of this forum is to get better. :) If nothing else, I hope everyone has a good laugh reading this, and enjoys telling me how I played like a big fish on this hand. I would probably have to agree!

I actually like the turn bet here if you got the tell. But, I would have raised the flop to trey and get out the player behind me. Hell, you might have even folded off everyone and taken it down right there.

Sometimes playing a hand sub-optimally works out well. Go spend that $$!

I guess with the read it might be OK, but I wasn't really very certain that the other guy was drawing. I think the play for the guy with Ax would be to have raised me on the turn, which would put me in a bad way, but he mistakenly had one of the two of us on a better A, so in that sense the call that scared the crap out of me actually was what knocked out the Ax hand.

I usually go with my instinct when I have them, although here I'm not sure if I had a valid read or if I just succumbed to my tendency towards over-aggression which works well in tournaments, but not always so great in ring games where people call you more liberally.

Thanks for the response.

Instead of seeing this as an example of a bad play that worked out well, you ought to see this as an example of 'non-textbook' play that is essential to success at the higher limits.

Maybe you are right, I can't tell if it was a breakthrough or just bad, but I followed the advice of TJ and Phil Hellmuth and "went with my gut" so maybe it's not as bad as I thought immediately afterwards.

Keep in mind, however, that most of these plays are going to look stupid when you get called by a better hand. But it only has to succeed a small % of the time (as it did here when the caller behind you 'ran interference' for you and caused the weak ace to fold, or when you get to see the river when you would've otherwise folded and either get out or have your winner hold up) for it to be a profitable move.
Too many people focus on the 'looking stupid' part and think that it was a bad bet when it doesn't work out. I think it's more important to think about 'missed opportunities' instead. In other words, if you had the chance to win a hand and failed to act, that is a much bigger mistake than making one bad bet.
In addition, making those 'unorthodox' plays makes you unpredictible, which is extremely important when you play with more observent opponents.
As I've said in other posts, failure to act aggressively in key moments is the biggest mistake you can make in the middle of a hand.
