I am a new hold'em player. While I think my basic poker skills are pretty good, I'm sure I could use some quality instruction and tips for reading other players, betting strategies, etc. Does anyone know of good poker instructors in the Los Angeles area, other than the ones I've been giving alot of money to at the Bicycle Club?

Ask your buddy LC Greenwood.
Sorry, couldn't resist. Hope it goes over well.

I don't reside in CA, so I can't help you on this one. Good luck in your search, but in my opinion, it sounds like you are a visual learner, so you'll have to keep playing and testing your methods. (Assuming you've read the books on these subjects.)

Poker journal and Wilson software?, PBG, 13. Oct 2003 15:49

I used to think I needed a "coach", but the truth is the best coach you can have is your own powers of reasoning. Explore the hands you have trouble with. Explore how you feel before you sit down. Are you tired? Hungry? Not in the mood to play poker? Too caffeinated? Feeling self-destructive? Feeling vengeful?

What books have you read? Have you underlined important concepts and committed them to memory? Your poker books should be dogeared and full of yellow highlights. You should know what your strengths and weaknesses are every time you leave a session. You should be able to replay every important hand in your head.

It's not about loosening up, tightening up or playing only Group I & Group 2 hands. It's about being and becoming and making your game an organic extension of yourself. Sometimes you're going to raise with K-2 offsuit because the texture of the table tells you that you can pick up the blinds uncontested. Sometimes you're going to fold JJ. I've been looking for that x-factor that separates the yahoos from the money makers too and I think every time I play, I discover something that brings me closer to understanding it.

Finally, the software is soooo important. This is the time you take to talk yourself through hands. "Okay, he did not raise pre-flop and has been playing very tightly the last fourteen hands." Unlike playing online, you can take your time and really understand the motivation behind your own folds, raises, calls.

Stan Goldstein - ask the floor at the top section at the bike if you don't know him.

You're welcome. I just re-read what I wrote you and I didn't give you much. He is without a doubt in my top 3 of most respected opponents I have faced in 20 years. He was teaching 2-3 years ago on the side - I don't know that he is now. If he is and you decide to go for it, it'll be money well spent.

Best of that short term thing.
