Will they bluff raise?, Roy Cooke, 13. Oct 2003 13:17

I see many inexperienced poker players automatically pay off when raised, even though their hand cannot beat any hand in which their opponent would raise with.

When facing a raise, I ask myself if the player is capable of raise-bluffing. If he is not then I ask myself if he would raise with a hand that is inferior to mine and what is the propensity of his range of raising hands to possess a holding that I can beat. I then compare the size of the pot to my judgment and pull the trigger on my decision.

If he is capable of raise-bluffing, I add my judgment of my opponents propensity to bluff in the situation that is current to the previous equation.

I:E: If there is a 10% chance he is raise-bluffing and a 10% chance that I can beat a hand in the range of hands that he will raise with....Is the pot laying me over 4-1 on the call? (The math is not quite right, but close enough)

One thing I strongly advice against is to make a value bet at the end with the intention of folding if raised. If you have that in mind, you're better off checking because otherwise you're laying odds of 12 to 1 (meaning you're risking 12 bets to maybe gain one bet).

(I remember one hand where I raise an opponent on the river with A high cause I thought he was bluffing and I wanted to drive out an opponent behind me. He reraise and I automatically called. He said 'flush' when there was no flush possible. He had misread his hand and my A-high took down a good sized pot.)
