| my current 'dream' is to occasionly goto Vegas and sit in a 10/20 holdem game, not because i think im gonna win a fortune but just to test myself and by the way dont ever let anyone talk you out of taking a shot as long as YOU are comfortable with taking it and living with the consequences (as will be shown in the stories below you can learn things even if not always apparant) first off to me taking a shot is playing at a limit where if you hit a reasonable win, it could have serious implications on how you think of poker and/or help your lifestyle nicely. also you have to have a session bankroll of at least 25 BB's to ride out some bad cards and still have a stack large enough to make your pots bigger when they come. first time i get the nerve and convince the wife that i really deserve the oppurtunity to lose $500 at 10/20 was at the mirage several years ago, we went for the weekend and it had been discussed and talked about that i would finally get to play 10/20. sign up, wait awhile, take my seat, we didnt feel comfortable asking to let my wife watch so she went to play some slots nearby, couple hands in i get pocket ladies and win over $200 on the one hand, OMG!!! thats bigger than any hand i had ever won before, im still nervous so i figure ill leave now with a win feeling giddy and i can play again later. wife was very impressed with the win moral-sometimes intangibles outweigh tangibles when deciding to continue to play, dont forget the little things they can add up. went back later but line was longer than i wanted to wait so said oh well ill try tomorrow. sunday i get into a 10/20 game at the Horseshoe, i take a beating for hours (but because this is *serious* money to me im much better disciplined) football is going on and people are watching the games more than the poker, finally after a few hours the table slowly starts to change, gamblers come around and are starting to fish, long story short i went from all in at one point to winning back all my money and a $25 profit to boot *$500 buy in for me* and this was by far the most time/effort i had ever spent playing poker til this point. moral-staying when you feel good about the situation can have positive results but sometimes its hard staying positive. months later we went back to Vegas and i was gonna play again, signed up and went to look over the tables i would be sitting at, i have never before or since gotten the feeling i got that day, while watching the tables i got the complete 100% conviction that if i sat down i would lose and it wouldnt be a contest. i *ran* out of the casino ASAP and never looked back, told wife that i felt like a total fish compared to those players and i wasnt willing to donate, think she was impressed that i would walk away knowing how much i wanted to play. moral-if you cant tell who the fish is when you sit down, look in the mirror for a good sign last story is a somewhat strange one but serves a purpose as well. again at the Mirage sign up for 10/20 get in game, take out my $500 and request chips, dealer gives me $100 worth and deals me in, after a few hands i still havent gotten my chips and somehow im getting vibes that i just dont belong at the table, either i was outclassed or just not mentally prepared or what im not sure, so i put my $400 cash back in my pocket, i then proceed to go all in on a KJ i totally misplayed and lost and got up and left the table $100 poorer but mentally ahead. moral-listen to yourself, listen to what your brain tells you, and if for whatever reason its telling you you dont belong get out ASAP, you will save money in the long run. | ||
