Overall I have run very well in poker the last 18 months. I have been especially hot online. I have a lot of experience playing poker and have relied on it to pay my bills for a long time now. In the last month I have hit a horrible run of cards. It is a battle to keep my head above water in every session whether live or online. It's not like I haven't been here before but it always amazes me how prone I am to forgetting that it's possible to lose for extended periods of time in this game!!!! Me? Lose? That's for the other guy.....I'm good. Well I know how stupid it sounds but secretly there is a lot of truth to this and it often doesn't hit home until you are living it. Very true about a lot of situations in life. Just a thought. GRANT PITTMAN

Totally true Grant and I am there with you. I was in an 11 session losing streak online that I broke out of this weekend. It is amazing how wins and losses tend to bunch in this game. And, it can be hard to keep the discipline to stem your losses each session by playing well regardless of outcome when you have lost 9 sessions in a row (for me at least...I tend to start pressing a bit after 5 or 6 losing sessions in a row).

Hang in there though...the session in which I busted out of my losing streak recouped 90% of my losses, so you are probably due for a nice run soon.

The timing of this thread is eerie. I play SNG's and have been in the money at least 1/3 of the time and started getting in the money about 2/3 of the time on Fri and Sat.... then Sunday I had a 2nd and 3rd in the first 3 games and had to stop to help someone with a computer issue that took a few hours.

I decided to get a few games in before hooking up with my friends for an evening of killing things in Operation Flashpoint.... and got the tar beaten out of me in a 5 game losing streak where I wasn't even close to getting into the money, costing me $165 in entries and I found myself strangling the mouse at the end of game 5... usually choking the mouse is a pretty reliable sign that I'm on tilt, so I shut it all down for the day.

****Worst part was that I saw clearly what I was doing wrong and swore to not do it again, only to get too aggressive and marry a hand in the next one, and then the next. Normally, I'm the guy who will always preserve my chances to win even if it means a tough laydown, but last night I was marrying top pair and just pushing chips in trying to shove everyone out. Each time, I swore at myself for being so stupid as soon as the hand was over and was determined to not do it again.... yet I did it for 5 games straight even though I saw the error in game 1.

So, I just came up with a "safety valve". If I don't get into the money, at least 3rd, for 3 games in a row then I need to step back for at least 4 hours and look at what I'm doing. Otherwise I'd just get more determined to win and push too hard... and we all know what that gets us.

I've played over 1,000 30 dollar sit n go's... and built a rather large bankroll on them. And I went on a stretch about a month ago of 15 no cashes in a row. I figured the odds of that being less than 1%... but since I played 1,000 tournaments I suppose it was bound to happen in that long of a stretch.

But regardless it was mind-numbing.... because I wasnt necessarily playing poorly, since I'm good at recognizing my mistakes, although I might have been affected by EXPECTING my rockets to get busted after a preflop all-in and low and behold they did time after time.

We all take much in life for granted (No pun intended :-). That said, I do see many players turn a short spell of bad cards into long losing streaks due to their lack of ability to handle losing well on an emotional level.

That said, Grant Pittman is one of the mentally toughest players I know and it is indubitable in my mind that it not the cause of his current dilemma!

Life is Good :-)

i think in poker, losing streaks separate the wheat from the chaff. i hear a lot of newer players say there up and how great they are playing, but just wait until that losing streak before thinking your a great player. its the real test and it can happen anytime. with all the new players out there, i think its important to remind them that even pros can go on extended losing streaks. and mental toughness comes in.

I just came off one of those about a month ago, it lasted several weeks, and only now is my bankroll starting to recover. I don't know if you do tourneys, but maybe a few cheap tournaments will help you get back into the zone. It allows you to get a lot of hands for cheap and if you pull down a win, it fills in that hole in your bankroll rather quickly.

The awful thing is that when you are running bad, a lot of plays that you make don't work anymore because people start to expect you to lose pots and call down all of your semi-bluffs. It's hard to adjust because things that you always got away with that are good aggressive plays, suddenly are taken away from you. They also call you when your ahead in the hand, and when your on a bad run they always seem to catch you! It's really amazing to me how a streak like this can go on for weeks at a time. But then again there are streaks where you can do no wrong for weeks at a time as well, so I guess it evens out. The uncanny winning streak is a lot more fun!
