Not Nearly as Bad. But . . ., Bart Mann, 13. Oct 2003 07:57

This isn't nearly as bad as the Aces story following, but it still fried my eggs . . .

UB.com last night, NLHE table. Tight for the first couple of hours, then the player mix changed and it became extremely loose—3 and 4-way action on big pots almost every hand. I convinced myself to wait it out, catch a good hand and take advantage of the idiocy. I catch A4s just left of the BB. I bet, get calls from 4 players, then one small raise in late position. I call the small raise with what I consider to be a nice “hidden” hand—tough for anyone to put me on it. 6 players total at this point. Flop comes 4 –9-4 rainbow. I’ve got bottom set with an Ace kicker. I bet small, knowing a raise is coming. It does, in late position again—3x the pot. I immediately make it another 6x the pot to go, and am all-in at this point. Fold, fold, fold, then a guy in middle position (who had called the other two bets) pauses for about 30 seconds, then calls. Late position 3x raiser bails, and it’s just me and middle position. Both cards come over. I’ve got a set of fours with an Ace kicker, he’s got J10 of clubs—matching the 9 of clubs on the board. At this point the guy has called my all-in bet with nothing, and needs runners to beat me--Js, 10s, two running clubs or two runners for a straight. Wouldn’t you know it, the next two cards are clubs.

Three people in the chat give him the “Great call, man!” and I had to try my best to not put my foot through the freaking monitor.

Ugh.

I have one almost as good. Party $100 NL table...quite loose. I am in the BB with AKo, 5 limpers to me, I raise the pot to try and win it right there and all limpers save the SB fold. He calls the raise. Flop comes KT6 all spades. I have the A of spades in my hand, so I feel pretty good about this flop. I bet the pot ($36). He thinks and thinks...and finally calls. Turn is the 3d. He checks and I bet the pot again. He quickly raises all-in. I ask myself what he could have? KK? Not likely as he just limped from the SB. Same thing with AA. KT? OK, maybe. Flush, maybe too, but I have outs there. I call his all-in and he flips over K3o WITH NO SPADES!!!!

Of course, the river is a blank and I lose to his two pair. I was astonished that someone could make this play. Anyway, despite this hand, I love the NL tables right now. So friggin juicy.

Man, this guy had a hundred reasons to let that hand go. Spade draw, ace in the flop, bad kicker, etc. But that's what I'm finding lately in the NL rooms as well--people calling all-in bets with maybe two or three outs max. Even with the beat I described (and one or two more) I nearly doubled my online bankroll this weekend playing No Limit exclusively.

Once you make that first big hit and build a cushion, you can afford to start seeing flops with hands a little farther down the depth chart. The pots get so big with so many callers, you can triple up by hitting a flop with a hand like 34s. The people with big overcards and medium pairs just don't see the straights or flushes coming, and they happily pay you off for one last chance at their set or two pair. Juicy is a good word for it.
