Record keeping:Hows and Whys?, mrbippy, 12. Oct 2003 14:28

Hello all!

The latter part of my question (Whys?) is more rhetorical than anything. What I mean to ask is what are you looking for and how do you apply that data to your game.

The "hows" part is the main question. What data are you recording other that what I guess is obvious; Hours played, Starting amount, +/- etc.

Is this something you do pad n paper or with computer programs?

Thanks

Mr B.

Mr.b

I currently keep my hourly rate at each game I play. I do this with a excel spread sheet. One thing I noticed through this is that after 4 hours my win rate seems to decrease for an hour before going back up. Through this I decided to take a 30min break after each 4hr session.

I am currently changing sites to one that supports Poker Tracker as I have the desire for more indepth analysis.

Other than for personal analysis (and to analyze individual opponents), its quite useful come tax time if you have all of your individual session win/losses with amounts.

Hey Mr B,
One thing I have discovered is that if you are playing online, all your records are automatically kept up to date for you at most poker rooms and you can then check them whenever you like (well at least that is the case in the rooms I play in).

It is really helpful because as I have quickly learnt, you tend to remember your wins more than you do your losses!!

Hi - great question.

You got good answers already - I'll just throw mine in there too. I , like Blade, use an excel spreadsheet. I use page one for daily net win/loss; page 2 for hours played and page 3 for limit played.

Through it I can:
1. Track monetary results and know exactly where I am at all times. I check my winning percentage every 1000 hours and if it is off significantly (ok - if it is off at all to tell the truth:) I look for why. ie (hypothetically): The last 1000 hours netted 1.727 BB's/hour up 0.11 from the 1000 hours previous. While not that significant over 1000 hours - still begs the question: Have I done anything to affect that result changing or is it the result of short term luck. If I decide that I have - then by all means I will continue to do it.
2. Have a detailed record for tax time. The only thing my records don't show which is required is where I was playing but I know what days I play where so that is easy enough to put in there later.
3. Do I have better results in one place over another? This has nothing to do with luck - it may be that I play better in place X for reasons that are thus far unclear to me. Record keeping lets me note and examine this.
4. Do I have better results on Mondays or Fridays? I may find that certain days have better results for me than others. Again, not a function of luck - but other reasons which may be determined or remain intangible. For instance, I had my best results on Wed. and Thurs. and was taking Sunday and Monday off. Since I also discovered that I play better after a day off. I rearranged my schedual so that I now take Tuesdays off ; my Wed/Thurs results have improved even further.
5. I can now make an accurate determination over a large sample of what my best game is. I believed that O8 was my best game but accurate record keeping showed me that it wasn't even close - I did better at hold-em at.
6. I can now make an accurate determination over a large sample of what limit I do best at. I find that I have problems in $30/60 and suspect it is because I am not taking a stab at the blinds enough and not adjusting correctly to the difference in playing decisions re: the small blind as opposed to a $20/40 or $40/80 structure. I haven't yet solved that problem - but it has had me avoiding all but the best games at that limit until I do figure it out.

Hope it helps.
