I was watching the 2003 WSOP replay today. Its the first time Ive seen it although of course I already know who wins. I was surprised at how many "all ins" there were. I realize that alot of times it is the correct move but how do you make it thru a tourney that big with so many coin flip situations? I saw JJ vs AK, QQ vs JJ and any number of other similar situations. It was no different from the SNGs that I play all the time. I didnt see any "expert" play even from Phil Ivey or Lederer or anyone else. I only saw one guy make a play that I wouldnt have made that saved him. If I remember right, Scotty Nyugen had AK. The other guy had KK. The flop had a K and when the other guy went all in, Scotty folded after thinking quite a while. I wouldve called and lost, but other than that I didnt see much of anything that I wouldnt have done (in the way of all ins I mean). So how do you survive so many 50-50 situations? Like when you have AK and the other guy goes all in before the flop..you call and he has 77. I watched it over and over

Most people aren't taking those coin flips during the beginning stages of the tournament. Being willing to engage in coin flips is primarily a late stages thing.

because of the blinds increasing, small stacks have to start making plays to keep them going, and the big stacks can afford to call more and hope to increase there chip lead. when u have been waiting all day to get some cards and youve been blided down, u have to make a play. also, as with all poker on tv, they do not show the "great"plays becuse they want to show the spots where people get knocked out, so it seems like there is more allins than there actually is. most of the great plays are folding over and over again...not good tv.

Not at all. Actually, it would be nice to see something other than the final table for a change! Every time I turn it on, it's the same old thing. It would be interesting to watch the last 4 or 5 tables, that would be cool; but to watch the whole thing from beginning to end? I don't think I could take that......I really don't! (LOL)!

But whatever you enjoy is all that matters : )

iceman-

While everything that everyone said is true (about the stages of the tourney, blinds, etc) keep in mind also that they are only showing you the most interesting hands. If you saw a dozen all-in hands, it was probably over 8 tables and a 4 - 8 hour period. It probably wasn't an abnormal amount, and probably wouldn't seem like a lot if you watched all of the action at every table from start to finish.
