$5 Omaha hi-lo at Party. There is a guy across the table from me who is raising or betting every hand, every round. The table is tightening up fast, afarraid to play anything. I realize this guy is stuck in gorilla mode, so if I have ANYTHING, I reraise. I can always count on him to cap every bet, so when I win, I win big.

Other players are commenting on his play, I just let him go. After a short while, he's up pretty big, we each have about 2300-2500 tournament chips, with 3 or 4 people out. He berates people for folding more hands than he plays. He's like a drunk jerk in a B&M. I just let him play on........

At about this point where we're table leaders, he checks from the BB. I actually comment. Get stuck? I ask. He says: gotta play with my head now. He started playing differently, though not necessarily with his head. In not too much time, he is out, and the 4 of us left have a sane game. I end up heads up, and after a good round of back and forth, I win this one.

but what got me thinking was, until this guy switched gears, this method worked out for him. I did take a lot from him, but he still had a huge stack just from bullying everyone, every round. If he had known what he was doing when he slowed down, maybe he'd have won.

Anyone play this way? I don't think I'll try it, even with $5, it seems silly. But in this one unscientific anecdotal case, it worked well. Had he continued, maybe he'd have placed in the money. Who knows?

Any thoughts?

You'll always remember the maniacs when they sit at your table and do good, you won't remember the ones that don't get miracle cards and just bust out early...

Smart calculated play always beats senseless bullying in the long run.

I think in the long run, if you play solid poker, you will profit from these types. You will get busted every now and then when they out draw you or actually have a strong hand then you. But if they truely are maniacs, you will punish them if you remember to play smart.

Let the others play weak against him then attack when you are strong.

DIsagreeing you always remeber the maniac that bust out early. Because you first thot when you see one is that he won't be here long, and your generally correct. But on the rare occasion that this person does take home some chips, it is probably for the same reason this person attempted. This is the ability to change gears. It didn't work with the above example, but it does'nt mean that it will not work.

My first thots when I sit at a table is will 'Bullying' this table be effective. Is it soft? Or the players the raising seldomly pre-flop? Do they fold to any raisers alot? If so then I'm the biggest maniac you'll ever meet. It makes me money. When the table adjust themsleves to me, then I change gears. This is want you want. To be in command of the table your at at all times.
