Casino Poker Virgin going to AC!!!!, Eman, 10. Oct 2003 07:26

Im going to AC on Monday to play some poker. How much money should I have if Im going to sit at a 2/4 or 3/6 game. Ive never played live poker in a casino before. I only play home games and many hours spent online. Any tips would be appreciated. Does anyone know if they have any small tourneys in any of the casinos on Monday. ($100 buy in HE or NLHE). Which casino do you think will be better for a casino poker virgin??????

Bring probably 50BB for the game you wish to play. Since you're an online/home player, you'll probably be shocked at what gets taken out in rake. LL games are most brutal in this respect. Some casinos are so bad, the game can basically be unbeatable. Don't know the standard rakes in AC, surely more reasonable then the casinos in the Chicago area where Iive.

I find B&M games to be much looser than online games at the same level. More people just trying poker for fun who have no clue whatsoever what they're doing. Online has the same newbies, but also more solid players on average. I know some would disagree with this.

Decide up front whether you'll chop or not, another differnece from online/home. Probably you should chop. The whole point of it is to save on rake as the blinds HU are typically fighting for a miniscule pot after the rake. Time charged games (again, not familair with AC structures) I usually never chop since that financial incentive isn't there anymore.

Chopping- If everyone folds to the blinds, both blinds agree to not play the hand and split the blind money. In the year or so I've been playing B&M, I've seen it happen maybe once. Not a big concern.

To respond to Eman's other questions- don't bother with the sunglasses, you'll look like a jackass in a LL game and people will read you for a newbie. Wear whatever headware you like. For 2-4 or 3-6, cash in for no more than $100 at a time (one rack of chips) but bring whatever you feel comfortable with in your wallet.

Good luck and have fun-

Eli

standard buy in for games is 25 BB as usually its a bet and 3 raises max so 2 + 2 + 4 + 4 BB max per hand is 12 so double that *standard as in enough chips in front of you for you to not feel pressure after losing a few hands not what most people buy in for*
also as someone posted a few weeks ago if you double that to 50BB as a buy in and can be very stern with yourself about only losing half your even better off *same reasoning if you take a few bad beats and lose 18ish BB you will still have money in front of you to play the way you know you should without feeling like your short on chips*

one side note that i dont see mentioned often for people heading to B&M all the ones i have been to if it gets HU there is unlimited raising allowed *same structure just no max number of raises*

what to wear be comfortable, whatever that is

bankroll to take with you 300BB or as much as you can comfortably afford to lose and not give up on the game whichever is less *this is such a subjective area this is about as close to an answer as reasonable*

oh yea HAVE FUN!!!! hope you come home a winner and have a great time

Hi Eman,

The Tropicana in AC spreads the weekly tournaments, but their tourney on Monday is 7 card stud.

As far as which casino to play in?........I personally think you'll feel more comfortable at the Tropicana or the Borgata. The Taj will have more games to chose from (especially during mid-week)....but their poker room is quite large and it may be a bit overwhelming to a new B&M player. (just something to consider). The Borgata has a very nice poker room, and when I was there, there were alot of new faces. Not the same ol' regulars that will be at the other two places, so that may be a good choice for you, too.

How much money to bring?........I think you'll be fine with about $300

Have fun!!!

Hi Eman,

I don't play on UB so I'm not sure how the players are there, but, the play will probably be about the same. Actually, the people who play on-line might even be a bit better because sometimes, a person who would normally play at a slightly higher limit in a B&M, might play in the lower limit games when they're playing on-line; ie, faster pace games.....bigger swings, etc..But, if you play a tight-aggresive game, and you can focus on the players at the table, and you can adjust properly to their play; (and you remain disciplined and be patient).......I think you'll do just fine, and "that" can be your strategy!

let us know how you make out : )

Eman, something else that you need to be sure to watch that caught me the first time I played live is break taking. I was so excited to be playing that I only took like one break and that was to eat. It will be good if you have someone with you so you can meet up at certain times and you can at least get away from the table. Also, be prepared to change your game. I made a mistake when I got used to playing a loose aggressive opponent and it took me to long to change back styles after he left. Good luck.

Eman-

I play a lot of 3/6, and I like to buy in for $100 and keep another $200 in my pocket so I won't play scared.

The biggest thing I can think of the you would never worry about online is protecting your cards; especially if you end up sitting next to the dealer. Get in the habit of keeping a chip on them. I've seen more players have their cards accidentally mucked than you can shake a stick at, and once it happens your hand is dead, nothing you can do about it.

I've been planning to do the same for quite some time now, but online play is just soooo soft. Tell me how it went
Oh, by the way AC isn't the best place to lose your virginity. The girls there are expensive, and sometimes carry diseases. So I've heard

EMan...

First time in Casino was at Trump Plaza or Trump Something in AC. Won just under $300 playing $2/$4 over about 8 hours. If you play good cards (e.g. A-10's and higher, and decent pp's like 8's and higher unless on the button when I'd go down to 5's or so), expect to win. I found that a lot of people, just like online, will stick around with junk. If you have a pocket hand and the flop hits you, charge hard. You'll knock the table from about 6 players to 2, and then you'll murder them when they stuck around the whole way on a draw or a middle pair.

I saw more people trying to win with lower and middle pair than I would imagine. The $2/$4 game is absolutely beatable if your standards are good.
