| Another 'going to Las Vegas' message! I'm taking my recently met (relatively speaking) SO down to Vegas... or rather, we are going. The moment I suggest that I pay any more than my share, I'm liable to lose something valuable to me... Which has kinda opened up a dilemna for me. She recently was in a car accident and didn't work for a few months and is going to school, so money is an issue for her, whereas I don't have that constraint. I would like to show her a good time but from the last time I was in Vegas, I remember everything being fairly expensive - especially any of the normal romantic stuff. Soo.... I was hoping that anyone that knows Vegas really well could share a little of their wisdom on hotels and what not. I'm aiming specifically for the cheapest time, dec 14-18ish. Any online sites (I've checked quite a few forums/sites and they are not useful... At least I trust people's opinions here...) I have a few tricks that I'm thinking of - namely hiding what I'm doing from her, heh (truly the basis of a healthy relationship) - such as the famous room upgrade so forth. I'm going to hit a few smaller tournaments because I don't play ring games well and I can't seem to find tournaments up here (Vancouver, Canada). So, if anyone would like to share their wisdom, I would appreciate it! I'm looking for hotel tips and tricks, and any comments on the Spa stuff (so that there is something to offset me playing poker, no matter how ok she is with it, and she really is!)... and maybe a suggestion for restaurants too, if anyone has a favorite. Is there any way to arrange a meal beforehand, so to speak, to avoid the check hitting the table? :) I was looking at the cheap end (ie: ~50$ for bally's to ~120 at venetian/luxor) during that period - what are the chances of a reasonable (or free...) upgrade to a nicer room? And how much of a difference was there? (Last time was with a bunch of guys, and we took el cheap Imperial, so I haven't seen the other rooms yet, but the venetian looks incredible). Anyway, thanks for any input! As noted, I'll be around from 14-18th, pending, in case anyone would want to meet up... | ||

| Venetian is far nicer than Ballys and most other places in town, if you can get in there for $120 midweek (as you said) take it. No need to upgrade there, the standard room is better than any other standard room in town. Here's a tip for Venetian- call them rather than book through their website, they often have a deal in which you pay up front, non-refundable and your room won't have a view (you ain't guaranteed one anyway), and you'll get a considerably cheaper price. When you call, just ask the old standby "is that the best rate you have?" Other advice I would offer is to go directly through the hotel websites, don't bother with the general booking sites. You'll get more info and likely a better price this way. As for restaurants, it completely depends on your price range. Give me a ballpark and I can help you out. And by the way, how'd you get so lucky that your girlfriend wants to pay her share? Eli on 9. | Venetian is far nicer than Ballys and most other places in town, if you can get in there for $120 midweek (as you said) take it. No need to upgrade there, the standard room is better than any other standard room in town. I was able to... but I checked today and the prices seem to fluctuate somewhat (namely, up). I remmeber going through the Venetian - it was gorgeous... Would definately like to go there. I am compiling a list for prices (yah... what can I say, planned romance is much more me...) here... http://www.geocities.com/pt_gatsby/Page.htm I'm trying to hunt down best prices and what not, but it seems you are right. Best price is on the website. I'm having a hard time deciding because I don't really know the room qualities. Here's a tip for Venetian- call them rather than book through their website, they often have a deal in which you pay up front, non-refundable and your room won't have a view (you ain't guaranteed one anyway), and you'll get a considerably cheaper price. When you call, just ask the old standby "is that the best rate you have?" Thanks :) I'll see if that works. Other advice I would offer is to go directly through the hotel websites, don't bother with the general booking sites. You'll get more info and likely a better price this way. After many hours of looking, I have to agree. Didn't find a thing that was better. As for restaurants, it completely depends on your price range. Give me a ballpark and I can help you out. My price range is pretty much anything that's good - and if I can arrange a meal beforehand and pay for it before hand, its good. Otherwise I guess 'moderate' expensive. I was looking at buffets and comments on them, and I figured the two we would try would be "Le Village Buffet" and "Spice Market"... If you know anything else better or what not - and when to go - would appreciate it. Those are in the 20/25pp price range, so aren't unreasonable and sound like they are good. And by the way, how'd you get so lucky that your girlfriend wants to pay her share? I wish I knew. The irony is that I respect it - except this one time! I thought it was great until now... Its funny how this independence thing also prevents the other person from doing something nice... but anyway, that's another rant. | ||

| As far as the money you spend for food and entertainment, would she feel better about you paying if you won the money at the casino? I had a similiar situation where my friends couldn't afford to see the Siegfried and Roy show and wouldn't allow me to pay for their tickets. In my case I won enought money very quickly at the BJ table and they allowed me to buy the tickets because it was the "casinos money" that I won. In other words, they figured (incorrectly) that it didn't cost me anything. Even if you don't gamble much you could tell her you won the money. DRich | ||

| That's not such a bad idea, since I'm planning on playing some while I'm down anyway... Though I don't like pure deceit - just the partial kind :) Anything I can do to indirectly help our time there instead of directly lying about it... But not a bad idea. Lots of time left :) We'll see! | ||

| You might consider Budget Suites. It''s going to put you off the strip just a hair (or more depending on which one you stay at) but at $189 for a week with a kitchen, living room and seperate bedroom it's not a bad deal. As far as the SO's insistance that you are not going to pay for more than 1/2 - you could always suggest to her that she could pay you back. Or, you could explain that there are things you would very much like to do with her but can now no longer do because of her inability to pay for half. In other words - diplomatically point out her selfishness and give her a day to toss that around in her head. g/l | ||

| Hi Angel, thanks for that. Do you have any recommendations for the 'Budget Suites'? I pulled this list: http://www.budgetsuites.com/rates.html - are there others that are similar? It looks like a fairly good deal... Any bad expierences that you know of? I guess its one step down in romantic but many steps up in price! I may take your advice yet, regarding the paying stuff... Thanks again! | ||

| I understand Angel's advice, but if you're going for a romantic trip with your girlfriend stay somewhere nice and on the strip. If you can't afford Venetian, there are plenty of others that are quite nice and will be very reasonably priced midweek in the slowest month of the year. Check out Mandalay Bay for another good option, and it's only $89 a night that week, well worth it. As for dining, I'm responding to your other response here- don't know you and your girlfriends' idea of a good time out, but avoid the buffets for anything other than breakfast or lunch. There are a million nice restaurants around in every price range where you don't have to line up at a trough. One of my favorite restaurants in town is Drai's, which is in the basement of the Barbary Coast. It'll set you back $100 or so for the both of you, but most nice restaurants will, and there are plenty to choose from. Make her let you splurge on at least one nice dinner, you can always pull the "I won" even though you didn't. Eli on 10. | Check out http://www.cheapovegas.com/index.php For your price range consider Mandalay Bay, they have low limit tournaments every morning, beautiful hotel and rooms, poker rate, close to bellagio, good amenities. Last year you could get an upgraded room for $109, great deal. | ||

| well I don't know how you consider it close to Bellagio, but I agree that MB is an excellent choice. Eli on 10. | I just got back from my second vegas trip and would have to agree that Mandalay Bay would be a great place to stay. It is beautiful inside and out, they have poker, and the food is great. Their breakfast buffet was the best ive ever eaten. But one thing you should know is that Las Vegas is not a place to vacation when "money is an issue". Good Luck | ||

| Could someone help explain this to me, what does a poker rate entail, and just on a related note, what are the rakes at the casinos in vegas? similar to AC? | ||

| Well... I was looking at the new orleans, but... I think I'll end up with the Venetian. On the other side, I don't think its quite so fair to say that trying to so something for her is the same as cheating - but in any case, we actually talked it out and with a lot of me shopping around, got it to where she was comfortable :) So it ended up ok anyway. | ||
