In a home game, if a hand in hi/lo stud (any low) with a declare is the only one to go low (or high), must the hand be shown or can it be mucked?

Show for verification of low. If you have to qualify for low, you have to prove it, right? (can't prove that you qualify with only 4 cards showing)

Not necessary to show for high because you are the only one, and your high card that is showing wins.

I sounds like he doesn't have a qualifier for low, as I believe it is played with declare games.

As far as your question, I don't think there's a definitive answer since declare is rarely played anymore. If I had to guess, I'd say that you should have to show your hand to take a part of the pot. It's like in hold'em, if no one can beat the board, you still have to show your hand to take your split. Your best bet would be to implement a house rule for this and make sure everyone knows it up front, and stick to it.

In the games I play, there is no "qualify" for low if you are declaring. Effectively, you could declare low with two hidden pair if it is blatantly obvious that your opponents are all going high.

However, since we generally have 1 round of betting after the declare, then mucking the hand shouldn't be done. It isn't necessary to show anyone anything because you take half the pot, but someone might get pissed if you threw your cards in the muck and then scraped half the pot.
