Chicagoland Poker at Hollywood Casino and Harrahs--Thoughts from the Readers., RW, 8. Oct 2003 19:27

Hi everyone,

I'll be taking a trip to Chicago in the next couple of weeks and I'd be curious to know about the Hold 'em action in Chicago. If I'm correct, poker is played at the Hollywood casino in Aurora and at the Harrah's in East Chicago, Indiana. I called Hollywood--apparently, their lowest limit games are 5-10, but at the Harrahs, I think it is 4-8.

In any case, I'd be curious to hear about your perceptions of these casinos, the types of players (good, poor, maniacal, rock solid tight, etc.), and the overall atmosphere...also, if you have a suggstion as to one that is better and one in where the players are better and where they are poorer, I'd appreciate it.

RW,

Both rooms limits start at 5/10. The Harrahs website hasn't been updated in eons. Harrah's is much closer to downtown and is an OK room. Hollywood now charges an admission to the boat then another admission for a seat in the poker room. Aurora is very far from downtown! Rates vary depending on when you play. The rake is much lower though than Harrah's which is a Max of $6 plus $1 Bad beat drop at 5/10 tables. The play can't really be described as anything in particular you have a variety of rocks, maniacs etc. For the most part the 5/10 table at Harrah's is comprised of people playing "by the book" Easy to read, but you can get a lot of chasers. I've only played at Hollywood once and I'd have to say the players there were much weeaker. It might have just been the table I was at though. All of this considered Unless you're planning on a marathon session and are staying downtown and not in the western suburbs, I'd have to say Harrah's is a better experience. If you go on the weekend you might even see Jim McManus "Positively Fifth Street" author playing at the high limit (50/100 I think) HOSE game.

Good luck and have fun.

Whenever I play live, it is at Hollywood. Unless things have changed since Labor Day, there is a $5 admission into the casino but no separate admission into the poker room. It is a small room, usually 3 5-10 games, 2 10-20 games, and either a 20-40 HE or 20-40 Omaha Hl. Sometimes they play 1-5 Stud or 2-10 Stud HL. Rake is $6. During the day, it is a more passive game (usually). At night, the games get more aggressive. I'm not that good of player but if I can keep myself away from the 10-20 tables, I come out ahead about 3 out of 5 times. Never played at Harrah's so I can't compare it to Hollywood.

I thought I heard they now had an additional fee for the poker room and lowered the rake. I've not played since any of the admission fees started so perhaps I'm mistaken.

Hi...

I played in Aurora once on a business trip. A most unpleasant experience...Perhaps its because I got my butt kicked at the 5-10 table....5-10 is the minimum for holdem so I was over my head...
I am use to 2-4 or 3-6.

They have maybe 10 tables tops for Stud, Holdem and Omaha...
The give people about 5 minutes to answer their name when called....The wait lists are huge.

Plus, its a 40 minute ride from Chicago, at least.
I would try Harrahs.....
