| I am new to this site so maybe this has already been discussed, but I just caught a replay of this yr's World Championship (early rounds) where Mark took a huge beat to the cop from back East. I believe Mark got rivered with K's over 10's (when he was holding KKK) to end his hopes. HOLY SH##... and I was crying about losing a couple hundred bucks???!!! If Mark reads this or anyone here has talked to him about that beat, I would love to hear about how he handled it... what he did immediately following that day. I can't imagine it was just another "ho-hum" beat, but maybe you guys who play those huge games can simply shrug that sort of thing off. Me... I would have to buy 50 decks of cards, take the 10's out of them and send them to his hotel room with a note and all my "love." LOL | ||

| Mark handles everything with class and fortitude...It is a large part of what separates his ability form a lot other professional players. Roy Cooke and on 8. | How did I handle that beat? Why, I headed straight to the bar, of course. Actually, I was a bit numb to it at the time, but was fairly depressed for a couple of days afterward. The situation was: 70 players left (63 in the money); I had about 75K in chips (a little below par, but not a real short stack). The blinds were $1.5K-3K with a $500 ante (I think - may have been $300). David Singer brought it in for $8k in fairly early position. I raised to $28k with AK, hoping to win the pot right there. The cop calls behind me with a big stack (he probably had about $220K or so). Singer folds, so we see a flop with about $70K+ in the pot. Flop comes 34K with 2 diamonds; I have the ace of diamonds. I move all in (my only real play in this spot), and the cop ponders for a bit and then calls with his TT (no diamond). K on the turn, T on the river, and I'm out. Happens every day, but this was particularly poor timing. Winning the pot would have given me over $150K with 70 players left; definitely in a position to contend. But, that's poker. Mark | ||

| Mark- Can I ask about the $20k raise? Was there anything special (or mathematical) about that amount, or was it something to do with David's stack? Just curious as I am trying to improve my NL tourny play around the bubble and I think one of my leaks is the amount that I bet/raise relative to other stacks. Thanks and sorry to ask you to remember this truly horrid beat any more. Steve | ||

| Basically, I raised it 20K because it would force David to fold most of his raising hands. My perception of him was that he saw me as being tight and solid, so I felt he would fold everything but AA, KK, and possibly QQ or AK. Had I made a smaller reraise, he may have been mathematically obligated to call. A larger reraise totally commits me to the pot, and if a player from behind moves all in, I would have to call (and late in NL tourneys, generally if there's a raise, a big reraise, and then a move-in, you're in trouble if you don't have aces). | Ouch. That hurts. But, as you say, that is poker. And this is one thing I think we all have to learn to deal with: bad things will happen to us in play. As a player, I made a decision long ago that if I can't handle this kind of scenario, then I shouldn't be playing. I give you a lot of credit Mark. You are one of the pros who make it look easy to deal with some of the hardest parts of the game. -Moz "The more you ignore me, the closer I get. You're wasting your time." | ||
