Poker Tourney -Legal in NJ?, spaldman, 8. Oct 2003 16:28

I'm trying to organize a tourney in NJ - no house rake - just a bunch of people playing tournament style.

We had a place set up (a bar known for throwing bachelor parties - they would have open bar/buffet for $30, but they backed out -they think it may be illegal)

Can we host this at a place that serves alcohol, like a bar?

WHat if it's just a room where no alcohol is sold, like a condo rec room or a firehouse?

Can people bring alcohol?

What are the legalities in terms of who is making a profit, etc. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can't legally do it anywhere, alcohol or not, but don't let that stop you.

You need to look at the penal code in NJ. I would suspect that, if there is no way for the host to make money (other than playing, like everyone else) and the game is fair, it might be ok.

Hi,

Your safest bet would be to host the game in someones house, and don't take any rake at all. Make sure you don't have any cash on the table either.

Be careful about supplying/allowing alcohol in your game. It can/may have negative results for the person who is hosting it.

You can't hold a poker game in a bar, either. That is a big no-no.....and the owners would never allow it if they had half a brain!

Every state has different rules/laws, (and of the home games that I know about) in N.J., none of them take a rake/or a cut. If you work it 'that' way, you should be okay for the most part. Think about everything that you do, before you do it.

Spaldman - If you are going to move forward with this, let me know. I live in Morris County and would be interested in playing.

That's exactly what a cop would say, isn't it? ;-)

Used to be you could have a game in a firehouse in NJ - that changed some years ago - they made it illegal. As far as I know - and I've a pretty certain, you're out of luck if you're intent on doing it legally. I hope you win. ;)
