Perfect time to slowplay, magnus, 8. Oct 2003 10:46

With all the advice about winning the pot early (generally VERY good advice) and playing aggressively when you have the stuff, I though I would share this story as an example when (I think) it was right to slowplay. Correct me if I'm wrong....

I was playing a 10+1 NLHE SnG On Party last night.
Early in the tournament, I find JJ in my pocket in EP, but with all the fishes calling all-ins with Ax and even worse (and the blind being only 10/15), I decide to make a good bet (100 out of my 800 stack) to get out the worst hands. If I get a many callers and the flop is bad (containing multiple overcards) I can still release this hand.

MP and Button calls me. Ok, so we have some high cards out....

Flop comes JJ4 giving me quads (YES!!!) with 2 diamonds.
I'm first to act so I decide to slowplay this hand (not a had decision, there is not a lot of cards that could hurt me, just a new pair higher than Jacks on the board with somebody holding the same PP or a str8 flush).
I check, MP bets 75 (maybe he got 44 or he could have a higher PP), Button calls (nut flush draw?) and I call.

Turn is 5 spades, would not really help anybody and now I have the mortal nuts.....
I still check, MP bets 125, Button goes away and I call.

River is Kc. Now I have to get some more money into the pot and hopefully the MP have something good. I bet 125 to make it look like a steal attempt that he might call and MP goes all in! I call at once.

MP turns over KK for the boat on the river and looses all his chips with Kings full of Jacks, I kind of felt bad for the guy.... (but just kind of :-)

To slow play that hand is a no brainer.!!! If you had a set of J's and slowplayed it, then we have something to talk about. But quad jacks and first to act should be understood to slow play. Just my opinion.
