How good is my hand?, poker_dog, 7. Oct 2003 08:34 | ||

| I did a maths degree but gave up stats & probability after the first year... if i hadn't, maybe i could make a better stab at this question... Say i have AQ in a ten-handed game - I'm UTG with 9 still to act... what is the probability that none of my opponents hold a hand that dominates me (AA, KK, QQ, AK)? Obviously, if it was just one opponent, there are 3 ways he could have AA (same for QQ), 6 ways he could have KK, and 12 ways he could have AKs or AK. Then divide by the total number of possible hands [side note: what is this given you have AQ... not 1326 anymore] to get the probability that you are dominated? But how do you do this with 9 players still to act, or 6, or 3? Thanks in advance for helping me out with this... | ||

| I dunno, but it seems like every time I have AQ, someone calls my raise with pocket 3s and catches a set on the flop... ;-) -Moz "The Queen is dead, boys, and it's so lonely on a limb." | ||

| the math is pretty tricky without a computer program of some sort, but my best educated estimate is that in the situation you describe you'll run into one of those hands somewhere between 12.5% and 17% of the time | ||

| A Q is a dog under the gun, its a playable hand out of late position, and is only worth calling a raise of 1 bet....... | ||

| That's a good question. I've been wondering the same thing myself, as well as similar odds with 8,7,6,...,3,2 players left to act, along with the same question for hands like AJ, A10, KQ, 99 etc. I've been going on feel and experience but I suspect I tend to underestimate the potential pain from hands behind me. In loose games where you can count on action behind you from inferior holdings its worth the risk. But if the game is tighter than you hope it can get to be a real drain discovering that you are only getting action from holdings that have you dominated. As aspiring professionals we should really have precise knowledge of these particular odds imo. A good hand is only good if it's not up against a better one. | ||

| Sounds like a good book to have. So in a full ring game you should be seeing someone with AA,KK,QQ,AK nearly twice every time around the table? ouch | ||
