Tourney Bully..??, Bentzen, 6. Oct 2003 15:38

Yesterday I went from being nr 3 Chipleader to end the tourney as number 46. Within 10 minutes.
Needless to say the prize money was between the 40.

When I look back on those 6-8 rounds I think I might have tried to bully the other players to much and got beaten for it.
Is there anyone who wants to throw some comments on bullying or tightening up at that time of a tournament.

Thank you
S.Bentzen

Why would you bully when all you had to do was sit and wait?

I don't know. I think it comes down to what your goal is. Win or make $$. If it's make $$, then tightening up considerably once you get a lead is the safest way into the payoff. If you're going after the win, others will take over the small stacks and put you at a disadvantage in later rounds.

I think philly has the right idea. Usually, I play to the table. If I'm ruling the table and no one is fighting back, I'll continue to bully. I'll generally stay away from fighters, tighten up (esp from EP) pre-flop and look for good opportunities to be aggressive. As usual, I find the middle road to be best. This is all based on NL tourney play.

I don't think I'd totally sit back and wait, but I would tighten up considerably. When you do have strong cards, you will be able to steal some pots. You can also look for an opportunity to trap a small stack, or even a medium stack if the flop hits you just right, ie set, top 2 pair. Just remember not to get too involved with drawing hands, and if you miss the flop, get out!

Hope that helps

It's a big leak of mine.
Have just ordered Hold'em NL, PL championship by McEvoy, hopefully it will help my touney game.

Have done well in Ring Game, but it's a completelly different game..
Thank you for your comments..
