going all-in or betting the flop?, chris nelson, 3. Oct 2003 17:20 | ||

| Small no-limit B & M tourney. Middle stages - 7 out of 14 tables left. Blinds 200/400. Ante 50. UTG raises all in 950 more. 1350 total. Fold. Fold. Fold. Call. All else fold to me. I'm in the big blind. Red nines. I have 2200 in chips. It costs 1050 a round. I know I can't wait. I put the UTG on overcards. Probably paint paint or ( better ) Ace rag. He's desperate, next hand is his BB. The lone caller, I put him on small pocket pair. I've been watching him. Incidentally, he's the chip leader. OK. I figure I'm a 3 to 2 or a 11 to 10 favorite over the all in and am a 7 to 1 favorite over the caller. I'm getting over 4 to 1 pot odds and am pretty sure I have the best hand. My question. Strategy wise, is it best move in or call and then bet the flop? I decided since I was only a slight favorite against the all in and a clear favorite against the caller, I better get my money in and at least double my raise in case I get drawn out on by the all in. (52% of the time) How was my reasoning? UTG KQo caller 44 My read was perfect. Results - the 13% of the time got there. A straight by the river. Flop - 10/7/5 Turn - 6 River - 3 for 3/4/5/6/7 seven high str8 I busted out but was quite pleased by my play for a large majority of the tourney. I probably would have won had I just called and then bet the flop. Is that being results oriented? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris | ||

| I think you played the hand fine, although you aren't a 7:1 favorite against a smaller pair. Closer to 4.5:1. They may only be 7:1 or so to flop a set against you, but by the time the smoke clears you aren't that big a favorite. That's just details, though; I like it that you analyzed the hand correctly and got your money in with the best hand. Mark | ||
