Hey guys,
The cold is coming and once again i am not looking forward to it. Ive been thinking about moving but the only thing keeping me back is my tiny 3500 bankroll which will be even smaller after next weeks Vegas vacation.
I do not plan on playing professionally. I figure I can find work at a casino or at a group home (my current job) and then grind out my walking around money in the small limit games around town. I think this is a good idea because i am young, single, and have little resonsibility.
So for you guys that live in Vegas...are there affordable places to live that arent total dumps? How much does dealing school cost? Do you know of any group homes for children or adolescents in the area? Anyone looking for a roomate? Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, there are plenty of reasonably priced apartments in Vegas. I moved there in 1995, and lived in an apartment then, but haven't for several years so can't give you much detail about it. There are lots of choices in decent areas, though.

You might want to check out the St.Jude Boy's Ranch in Boulder City. Its a bit of a hike from Vegas (15 miles or so southeast of town). There are probably some other group homes for children, but that is the main one I'm aware of. You could get an apartment somewhere in Henderson (its all pretty much a good, newer area), and play poker at Sunset Station (good low limit action in hold'em and straight high omaha).

Good luck,

Mark

stay where your at till you have a "FOR SURE" job, and 5 grand CASH. Many apt complexes in the nicer areas wont lease unless you HAVE a Job, a bank account, good credit and CASH. Theres no place where CASH talks Louder. And If you want to be Heard you'll need that CASH pad to do your talking.

Hi. Life in Vegas is good. But a lot of people do notmake it here.

You sound kind of realistic, but I'm not that sure about grinding the low limit games. Rakes are very high in most LL games, and you can't make that much.

Spend your vacation looking for work and apartments. Also, try a few local low limit games (Texas Station, maybe) and see how you fare.

It may take a lot of your bankroll just to put down first and last month's rent and a security deposit. There are great casino jobs, but there is always a break-in place or period (you rarely get to start your valet workat Bellagio. maybe Lady Luck, where the tips are a lot less).

Listen...if you follow your dream, at least you lived life on your terms and will have no regrets.

I was offered a job in Vegas in May...I love to gamble and party, and I am also in the restaurant business(which makes me succepable to being really , really frivolous). I spent 2 weeks there, had a great time, but decided no matter how much money was offered to me, I probably would be in rehab within a month LOL...not saying that you are like me, but its a tempting place and easy to go through cash like you're the prince of Saudi Arabia...I will move there eventually, but I need ALOT of cash to support my bad habits as well as have a good time. Spend at least a week looking for places to live, the market is really reasonable, and make sure you have at least 3 job interviews set up BEFORE you get there. Walk ins don't seem to appreciated there. Meet lots of people and make LOTS of connections. You would be surprised how easy it s to find a job when you know the right people in that city!!!!

Good LUCK!!! Its a FUN town, that's for sure!!!

Kimmi :)

A decent 1 bedroom apt in vegas will be around $600-$700 but you can find cheaper ones down to about $400. As for the dealing school, I went to PCI. I think it was $200 to learn one game and $300 to learn two. Make sure you check around, I've heard of people paying in the $1000's for school. I learned craps at PCI and from what I understand it is one of the best to learn craps. I would recommend learning BJ. I don't know about poker dealing school but I know they go for there own and can make quite a bit. If you learn craps, which takes a lot more experince than BJ, it will be harder to move to better casinos as fast. When you start out dealing you will be lucky to make $40-$50 a day in tips in Vegas, and could be as low as $20 depending on where you break in. You usually only deal at a break in for a few months, and then get to move up. If you do start dealing, make sure you keep in contact with everyone you work with even after changing jobs. Everyone is constantly moving, and it's all about who you know.

My brother went to dealer school and learned craps. They start most people out at the El Cortez - a real dump and he was broke a long time. But then you will move up.

No one in Vegas likes a newbie. My Mother moved there without a job and it was tuff to get a job because every employer has been burned by sick gamblers that don't last, so no one likes to hire newbies. Also no one would rent to her either. She had to live in a dump week-to-week place for a year until after she got a job and established. Now she makes 60k - but it took 5 years.

So bottom line find a job first. Unless you want to live by the set of your pants for about a year.

Hey -

I'm currently in the same situation you are... Thinking about moving out to Vegas in May - after my lease here in PA runs out. If you come across any info. worth passing on - please do.

Thanks!
