Needed: Advice for Single-Table Satellite, Bart Mann, 2. Oct 2003 12:49

* I posted this in "Strategy and Psychology" earlier today and didn't get a single response. Maybe you guys can help . . .
----------------------------------

Tomorrow night I'll be playing in my first NLHE "single-table" satellite tournament (live, not Internet). 10 people pay $100 each, and the winner receives a $1,000 seat to a much larger (and more lucrative) tournament later this month.

I've played in three live NLHE super-satellites recently, where you start with 250+ people paying $30 each, and the top 25 win seats. These tournaments have been loaded with unlimited rebuys, add-ons, that sort of thing. But the tournament tomorrow is obviously a different animal. 10 total players, no rebuys, and a single winner takes all. In the super-satellites the strategy was to survive until the rebuy period was over, then play tight-agressive. But with this alternate format, I'm not sure what to expect or how to approach it. To me, it's got the feeling of the final table at the WSP--which I love. Does anyone out there have a bone or two they can throw my way? How are others going to play? How should I play? What pitfalls should I look out for?

Thanks for your help, everyone.

Similarly to a larger, no rebuy tournament, do what you can to let the other players knock each other out early, there will be a few players who will knock themselves out just fine on their own. Play tight/aggressive to make sure your stack can grow, just don't go crazy. Steal the blinds when you can, that will help you stay afloat. When it gets shorthanded, get aggressive- very aggressive.

Bart-

Any chance this is at Casino Arizona? I won one of those sattelites about two weeks ago for last weekend's big tourney. It was a blast. :)

Basically, it is very similar to playing a SNG online, or playing the final table of a multi with everyone even going in.

Use opportunites to steal, and spend some time watching the other players in the first round or so. Play tight and let them beat each other up... but beware of anybody who starts building a huge stack. That's the guy that needs someone to put a chink in his armor. If he's smart, he'll use his stack wisely to intimidate others into making bad laydowns and bad calls.

As the number of players gets smaller, you have to get a little looser and a lot more aggressive. Throughout the game, you need to be thinking of your bets in terms of the size of the pot; this becomes more true as the number of players gets smaller.

If you have a chip lead, anytime you are involved, you want to be putting somone on a big decision.

Hi BartMann you must play at Canterbury? I played in 3 satellites Thurs night won the 2nd one for $350.00 plus I won a 140.00 in a side game. Maybe we played together. My strategy is to start out like a rock, and turn into a maniac after 3 or 4 people are gone.

You are correct! I played in three of the four $30 super-satellites, but couldn't get over the hump. Finished 98th the first time, 55th the second time and I'm not even going to admit what happened the third time. I'm headed out in about another hour or so to try a single-table. What do you mean you won the second one last night for $350? Weren't you playing for a seat in the October Classic? How did you get cash? Don't tell me there are rebuys again . . .

Hi BartMann It wasn't 350 in cash it was 50 cash with 3 $100 chips which cna be used for buy ins. I used them to buy into the $100 limit holdem on Sat and the $100 buy in NL on Sunday so will see you there. I play as Tim C at Canterbury. Good luck tonight
