I will be playing for the first time in a casino next week. This is the first casino that I have been to that has poker. Is there anything that I need to know about playing live compared to online? For example, do I tip the dealer if I win a pot, if so how much? Also if you think there is anything else I should know about casino play, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Michael,

A dealer is usually tipped about $1 for a pot you win. Thats only if it's not a miniscule one though. If you just pick up the blinds or a bit more you are not obliged to tip the dealer. Remember if the dealer is incopotent (moves the game slowly, misses things etc) you shouldn't tip him/her either.

The next thing you need to know is that you may have to wait for a seat at a table. This is important because after your drive and wait when you finally sit down and get going you'll likely be anxious for some action, RESIST THIS TEMTATION, sit and play tight and wait for your hands to come.

That leads to my last item. B&M play is much slower than online so it might seem that you aren't catching any cardsa all night long and your starting hand requirements are likely tyo loosen up. DON'T PLAY JUNK. Just wait and the cards will come they'll just seem to take longer to come when at the casino.

Good Luck,

John

walk in door find card section find person in charge of the waiting list *forget what person is called like floorperson* put name on list for game/s you are willing to play *not only limits but type of game* might mention first time playing there and is there anything you should know? *might have jackpots or daily specials* sit and wait for name to be called (bring a book/magazine to read, if there is a bar or other gaming you could have mental impairment before you sit at the table *alchol or losing at other games makes a tough situation even tougher*)
tipping i agree any reasonable pot i tip
i would plan to devote at least 3 hours or more to your visit, this is not to say you have to stay there that long but anything less and your pushing you luck to come quickly (if cards come and you win and feel like heading out head out but dont put yourself in a spot where your anxious for cards to come NOW, be patient and play good cards)

I'd say tip the dealer a $1 for each big pot you win. Don't make any comments about something you threw away until after the hand is over. Don't splash the pot. PROTECT YOUR CARDS. Don't correct bad players. Let them give them your money. I'd see if you can call ahead and get your name on the list early. I've only played at one casino but on Friday and Saturday nights and there is about a 4-5 hour wait unless you call ahead. It's true, you are more tempted in real life to make things happen and play hands you shouldn't. Don't play trash hands no matter what but don't be afraid to call raises in low limit games if you have the odds and are in good position. People in low limit games almost always pay off you no matter how obvious you play the hand. I mean obvious as in raise on the turn when you hit a flush, bet on the river. Don't give any obvious tells away. That's my advice!

Hi,

Be prepared to wait for a seat. Allow yourself ample time for this day so you won't get impatient about the time that it may take you to get into the game. When you first walk in.....go to the podium and ask the person who signs the players up for the games, what games and limits do they have (that are your preference), and ask them how many games do they have at each one of these limits. Ask them to point out the games to you so you can take that time to check them out. You'll probably be able to observe them from a close enough distance, and then when they do call your name for a seat, you may have a little bit better of an indication of who the better players are.....the calling stations are, the "crazy players" are.....etc, etc.. If there's an open seat as soon as you get to the casino...then take the seat, and if you want a little bit of time to check out the players first, then wait for your big blind to post, even if it means waiting for a whole round before you can do so. (that'll be up to you, and what you feel might benefit you the most).

Casino poker is going to move alot slower than on-line poker, so your patience and your discipline is really going to be tested here. You're probably not going to get as many good hands coming your way, (as opposed to online....due to the amount of hands that get dealt out), so try not to be tempted into playing weak hands just because you may have been sitting there for an hour or so constantly mucking crappy cards.

I would try to talk as little as possible this time so you can really concentrate on what's going on. You'll be able to focus more on the game and the players habits and such if you keep your eyes and ears open. Be friendly though if someone talks to you, just try not to talk 'too' much. (if you know what I mean!). Keep your secrets (strategies) to yourself. Remember....if there are really bad players in your game, those are the ones that you want at your table; don't say anything mean to them AT ALL! No matter how 'bad of a beat' they put on you! They are your friends! (for now).

Make sure you act in turn. Don't fold prematurely, either. When it's your turn to act, even if you have intentions of folding, just say "check", and 'then' when and if someone bets.....when the action comes back to you....then you can fold your hand.

Always protect your cards that are in front of you. Dealers sometimes accidentally swoop them up and toss them into the muck.....so either keep your hand on them, or bring a little object to put on top of them to prevent that from happening.

Tipping : It really depends on the limit that you're going to be playing at. If the limit is a really low limit, then I would tip .50 for any average pot that I won that didn't include just winning the blind money.(if that was the case, then I wouldn't tip anything. A dealer is not going to be expecting a tip if you raise before the flop and everyone then folds). I also wouldn't tip if say, I raised preflop.....got one caller.....bet the flop, and then he/or she folded. If the pot is of decent size though, then I would tip one dollar. If the dealer for that half hour was a really bad and incompitent dealer, then I would have no problem tipping them zilch. But you do what you feel comfortable with. But keep in mind....over tipping will cut into your earn ALOT. You'll see when you get there....most players tip $1on average.

Good luck to you when you go. Relax, and I'm sure you'll be just fine.

4P-

P.s.

Stay away from the casino games....this visit is for poker purposes only!!!

Completely agree with all said by 4 Poker. I've been playing at PP online for about 8 months and in home game tourneys for a year. I was really nervous the first time I went to a casino (Taj Mahal) in Atlantic City.

I waited a few minutes and got on at a new $2/$4 table. I was nervous as s*** for the first few times I went in...I'm sure everyone thought I was bluffing because I was shaking. Anyway, it took me about 20 minutes to calm down; partly because I was getting comfortable, partly because I was winning.

I won $296 in about 8 hours...not bad for a $2/$4 table. Seriously, it wasn't hard. You will see a ton of people at the table playing to win with middle or bottom pairs. It may be tough to sit around because it doesn't move as fast as online poker, but it was so much easier to really be tight and aggressive. If I had A-J or higher, for the most part I was raising preflop to knock people out. Probably 85 % of the time, if someone stuck with me after I raised with that, I won. I learned some very good lessons there...one, you're reminded to play premium hands, and 2) you can easily take advantages of other peoples mistakes of playing draws way too hard and playing to win with middle pair or top pair crappy kicker.

I almost always toked a $1 to the dealer for every win and a $1 to the waitress for my sodas. There's no reason to be short or rude with anyone, especially the help. Trust me, they appreciate it. Also, don't be too chatty but don't be too much of a rock...I learned so much about one guy sitting next to me by just chatting a little...he even showed me his hole cards (after I folded) and told me he just couldn't give up his pocket underpair because he might make a set....what? 2 outer on 47 cards? Go right ahead and thanks for letting me learn your style!

In any case, have fun and relax and play very good starting hands...a lot of people play anything and you can easily get the best of it more than 1/2 of the time.

Michaliv, I am also really nervous about stepping into the old brick and mortar for the first time after playing comfortably online for a while! Please can you come back and let me know how it went?

I recommend introducing yourself to the floor manager and telling him that you are a "newbie." He or she will do everything he/she can to make your first visit a pleasant experience so that you will want to return. That is, short of actually helping you to win money. Just relax, join a game at limits with which you are comfortable, and enjoy. Most B&M games are much tighter than you may be accustomed to, so you may have to tighten up.
Good luck
