| Thanks for the advice on two pair. I've also found playing pocket pairs to be tricky. Maybe its their relative strength in holdem that is causing me problems. Could somebody discuss starting hand requirements and, or post flop strategies for pairs. Thanks | ||

| Pocket pairs, even Aces, are a LOT weaker in Omaha 8. While the higher ones, especially Aces, can give you the top two pair hands, you always have to sweat the trips, especially with low pairs of 6's or less on board. Even catching full houses won't make you feel that comfortable, since you'll sweat the quads as well. In addition, pairs don't help hi/low hand potential (for the most part). I'm wondering, philly, why you even are looking at pairs that hard. Without the rest of the hand to use (to support two-way potential or shore up hi-only possibilities), it seems that you're distracting yourself. I take it back if you're just narrowly focusing on specific strategy components.. | ||

| They normally bad. Omaha is about getting as many combinations as possible, and having 'two' cards is just ugly. I suppose AAKK would be good (suited being great), and going for low with AA22 is decent (especially suited), though you run the counterfeit risk (lower than normal!). I think AAKK and AA22 are decent, but mostly based upon the power of the aces. Anything else loses a lot of appeal. Of course, that said... it depends on the game, your position and all the usual stuff... might be worth paying from the SB to see the flop... It also depends, if aces, if they are suited. That adds a few percent to your hand's edge. | ||

| Hi, Pocket pairs in Omaha 8 are 'tricky' because they're not as valuable in this game as they are in hold-em. All of your cards should work well together...not just A-A-crappy card- crappy card! Example: A-A-10-9 in Omaha 8 is not a good starting hand. Yeah, if everyone folds to you and you're on the button, you could 'raise' with it, but even then.....if you get called and the flop comes up with low cards.....you are not a favorite in this hand at all; especially if there's a flush draw out there (and you don't have it), and also if the low that "is" made is one that is too coordinated for making low straights. At *best*, you'll be fighting for half of the pot. Not a good and profitable spot to be in, in this game. If you want to play the pocket pairs, then make sure your other two cards work with them as well. A-A-3-7, A-A-4-5, A-A-2-Q suited (for example). Of course A-A-2-3 double suited would be the "primo" starting hand......I just wanted to give you some of the 'other' ones that although they're not as strong as A-A-2-3 double suited......they are FAR stronger than A-A-10-9. They'll have better possibilities in connecting to nuttier types of flops. Even a hand like A-A-Q-5 is better, because at least if you get called, you'll have a chance at flopping or drawing to a wheel. My advice: Don't get too caught up in playing pocket pairs unless the other two cards really work with them. Something like K-K-A-J w/a suited Ace, or K-K-2-3 for a cheap price in LP are pretty decent starting hands, BUT......you're going to have to release these hands preflop if and when your position is bad, or if there was too much substantial action before it gets to you, as well. They can be played.....just be careful. However.......Here's a couple of example starting hands that contain a pair that are 'not' playable (IMO). Hands like K-K-8-9, and Q-Q-5-6 are very poor starting hands....and hands like J-J-7-10, and 10-10-K-2, are also bad starting hands. There are (however) some decent starting hands to enter pots with for a cheap enough price, that contain a pair, but they're not neccesarily on the top of the list of premium starters. Hands like 2-3-4-4, 2-3-6-6 can connect to make wheels and other completed hands that can scoop the pot. Basically, with a hand like 2-3, and "any" pair to go with it, (other than holding a pair of 2's or 3's).....can be played if your position is good enough to play them in; ie;MP- LP, and if the game is not ultra aggresive. Just know what you're trying to flop 'before' the flop comes up, and take it from there. It must fit your holding perfectly.....as usual! If your pairs are connected with 2 other 'workable cards', than okay, otherwise........There's just never going to be enough correct times to enter a pot with a pair and two cards that are almost meaningless and not "nutty" (strong) enough, to make it correct ($) for you to show good results in Omaha 8. (So when ever you do hold a pair.....whatever the pair may be, you want to be sure that the other two cards will serve a purpose.) Other than that.......forget about playing any PP hand that isn't connected properly. You will lose money over the long haul.......plain and simple. The fuller the game, the stronger "your" hand must be as well. Yeah, It's hard to release A-A even w/two bad cards, and K-K w/two bad cards; especially if it's so cheap for you to come in with, and also if you're used to playing hold-em......but you have to think of Omaha, and how this game should be played for optimal results. Ace/duece is 'not so good' in hold-em..........and neither is K-K rag, rag in Omaha 8! Make the proper adjustments and you'll have a much better shot to show good results. 4P- | ||
